My present understanding is that you all (maybe me someday) wear

shower shorts when taking your cold shower. How can you take a shower

wearing shorts and get clean? Dancers wear leggings. Why don't you

invent shower leggings? Easier to take on and off.

Just wondering?

Sat Avtar Kaur Ji - I take a cold shower in the morning before sadhana -

that's ishnaan therapy. I take a warm shower in the evening - that's to

wash up and get clean. The idea of wearing something over one's hips and

genitals in the cold shower (not necessary in the warm one) is because

those areas of the body are very sensitive to cold and it provides some

protection from the direct hit of the cold water. I don't wash with soap

in my cold shower, just the warm shower (or bath.)

Shorts in the shower are to cover the thighs, to prevent flushing of

reserves of calcium held there.

As you probably know, the effect of the cold showers is to create a

rush of blood through the capillaries just below the skin. This has

two results: keeping the body warm from the sudden outside cold and,

the reason we are taking these showers, the sudden blood flow in these

areas flushes accumulated toxins to release them.

Dear James:

If you ever get depleted in calcium/magnesium you might find that you

get cramps in one of your feet foot or ankle. If you do yoga every

day, you'll find out soon. Eat calcium and magnesium rich foods (I

think that usually nature provides them together, it is only in

supplements that there are sometimes separated) and you'll save

yourself more problems.

I have not heard of anyone breaking bones for taking cold showers and

not wearing shorts. But I have not heard many stories of people taking

cold showers either! It could happen, I guess, these things don't

happen overnight and if one is attentive to one's body, the problems

are usually noticed and therefore can be corrected before they get

dangerous.

There may also be other health reasons for wearing shorts that I am

not aware of.

Blessings,

Awtar Singh

No need to wear shorts in the shower. Work up to full cold water if

you need to gradually day by day. The cold therapy is good for

overall circulation in the body as is hot therapy. What you can do is

take a normal shower in warm and once all done just give yourself the

cold shock for a few seconds to get the contrast effect.

Hi! Siri Kar Singh!

Evem though I have not been brave enough to take a cold shower, yet.

It could happen. In answer to your question, I think you could

measure the out side length of your thighs and that will give you the

length you need. You can have them made with drawstrings or perhaps

velcro for a fast get-a-way or just get bermuda shorts which are knee

lenght.

Although I was advised that YogiJi stated that taking a warm shower

before doing the cold one was like eating junk food before a good

meal, or something like that, I have always started with a warm shower

to get clean and then a few minutes of very cold shower. I get the

wonderful feeling of warm blood rushing into my skin making it bright

and pink afterwards. I have never worn shorts in the shower and have

never experienced any health problems.

Sat Nam Tony,

The idea of showering with warm water followed by a cold shock didn’t fly past Yogiji. When he was asked about it he explained that taking a cold splash afterwards is like saving dessert for last!

The cold water is a necessary flush of all the capillaries as well as the inner organs, for fresh blood rushes to the surface to defend against the cold. A cold shower with massage to enhance its effects will leave you feeling warm. A warm or hot shower leaves us feeling cooler.

All this talk about cold showers not being necessary, or to work our way up to a cold shower, is just our egos trying to talk our way out of doing it right.

The colder the better! Oil up first. If you still cannot bear it, then deeply massage where the water hits as you go, using a tool to reach your back if necessary. The massage/cold water should start at the soles of your feet, then your calves, work up the back of your legs (working your legs and feet against eachother), up the spine to the shoulders—and the head if you are washing your hair. You can do the arms at this point. Then do the face, massaging up on the forehead, upward circles down the nose, and under the cheekbones as you pucker your lips, and then stroking in upward circles from the chin up to the cheekbones. From there stroke up the neck, and give circular massages to the breasts and torso, the inner thighs, shins and tops of the feet.

Yogiji said if you the complete facial massage with the cold water you will never need a face lift.

I have been doing this routine for over thirty-five years. Even the coldest showers do not feel cold to me. It is blissful nectar, the Guru dancing over my skin.

Wearing shorts is important for both sexes when it comes to protecting the thighs. Use the fabric as a washcloth if need be.

Even during the day, and for runners, etc, Yogiji recommended wearing running shorts that cover the thighs to help maintain a pillow of warm air there. It is where red blood cells are produced, and should not receive a direct shock.

In addition, men are required to wear kacherra, shorts or men’s briefs to protect the testicles. Yogiji said that if they had existed at the time of Guru Gobind Singh, Guru Gobind Singh briefs would have been included in the Rehit. When testicles are hit by a direct spray of cold water they draw up from the shock, which he said is to be avoided.

My daughter cried when I first gave her cold splashes at the age of two. I told her it takes the same energy to cry as it does to laugh. Try laughing instead! And she did. A video made at a 1978 or 79 Solstice shows her standing in a white pickle bucket happily laughing as I pour cold Ram Das Puri water over her. Everyone was amazed.

Baba Singh told our yoga class a story in the early seventies that inspired me to start taking stark cold showers, no problem. It was about a rasty captian of a ship who bullied the hands and made life miserable for everyone. So the crew conspired to mellow him out. One day they picked him up and tossed him overboard into the freezing cold deep sea. He did not know how to swim and flailed wildly to stay above water. They didn’t throw him a life preserver until he was ready to sink.

When they brought him back on deck the captain was a changed man. The cold water had stimulated and soothed his nervous system to the extent that nothing bothered him.

We can be like that!

Loving Blessings,

Guruprem Kaur

I started taking lukewarm showers to work up to full cold. My teacher

told me that if my teeth were chattering, then it was too cold for my

nervous system at that time. So over the months as I got used to them

I could turn the water colder and colder, backing it off just a little

when my teeth sounded the alarm!

As I have practiced more yoga, I have been able to take colder

showers. I turn the water on full cold now, and if I miss this morning

experience I feel its lack the whole day.

I was told that the shorts were to protect the genitals, for magnesium

/ calcium balance. I still dont wear them because I wash during the

cold shower as well as the warm one I take at night.

YOU MUST CHANT when you get in a cold shower! It's the most amazing

thing - try taking one without chanting and then one with chanting,

and see how the cold affects you much less when you chant. This is the

last trick I learned about cold showers. Thanks to this group I am

learning even more!

Wahe Guru!

On p. 248 of my Level I teaching manual, it states, " Start with the outer

extremeties - feet, hands, arms. The thighs shouldn't go under the water

first, so as not to disturb the calcium-magnesium balance. The same for

the genitals and the head. Do not take a cold shower during pregnancy or

menstruation, or when you have a fever, rheumatism, or heart disease If

there are problems with sciatic nerve or high pressure, start slowly!

Wear cotton shorts to buffer the thighs and sexual organs " .

Yet to miss a day since they taught it to us - it's the ultimate

refreshment (ha!) and dissolves my morning backache.
