Guest guest
Sat Nam, In kundalini yoga there is an emphasis on mantra meditation. In other yoga traditions, there is an emphasis on silent meditation, listening to the sound of the breath. I'm confused. I find silent meditation almost impossible to do. My mind is very active. So my question is: is one type of meditation better than the other or more preferable to controlling the mind? When Yogi Bhajan spoke of meditating daily, was he speaking about silent meditation or mantra meditation? Thanks Tej
Guest guest
Dear Tej Kaur, It is not that one must choose silent meditation versus mantra meditation, but more that mantra meditation can lead you to silent meditation. The goal of meditation is to daily clean the mind, especially the subconscious mind, where we have stored past experiences and programming and information that we have not fully processed. Using mantra and conscious breathing gives us the capacity to experience those subconscious thoughts and sometimes traumas from past experiences and process them consciously (instead of subconsciously in a dream state) so that we gradually expand our awareness and mental capacity to be fully present. This daily meditative process or daily discipline means we make our mind our servant instead of being a servant of our mind by allowing it to dictate and control our behavior through the powerful subconscious programming that usually guides our actions when we do not meditate. Our subconscious mind has strong and powerful mental frequencies that have developed over many years. When we first begin meditating, we often start by repeating mantas aloud so that we can create strong mental frequencies to project those frequencies silently. Silent meditation creates more powerful frequencies than meditating aloud, but we usually need to repeat mantras aloud in order to be able to create the mental frequencies silently. Ultimately, mediating on the Shabad Guru, the pure frequencies of our own inner spiritual essence, which we experience when aligning our conscious mind with our infinite creative sacred being, will create the strongest frequencies that enable us to powerfully impact the universe. Usually, meditating first aloud with mantras and breathing, and then meditating silently with mantras and breathing, will assist in learning to meditate on the Shabad Guru, the sound current within you that connects you to your own divine and infinite creative Self. Guest guest
In Kundalini Yoga we generally use mantras even in silent meditation-in my experience. You may find meditating/chanting out loud with mantras gets easier over time. Endeavor to merge your conscious mind in the sound/mantra and try to keep doing that constantly. Yogi Bhajan said in meditation all we have to do is "hear your own sounds/repetitions." Once you develop some grasp on your own concentration/focus in meditation, you will feel the power it has, by the grace of the One. Then it may become easier to focus (on a mantra) in silent meditation. There are many factors that influence our capacity to meditate deeply. Guest guest
Dear Tej, A Mantra is a sound. Silent mantra is the inner sound of the self. There are a multitude of mantras. Each yoga tradition has its own set of mantras, though the principle is the same: use vibrations to connect to your inner self & , to your outer self [the Universe]. Mantra is a mechanism to help you, get rid of the accumulated stress, also, to fortify & strengthen the aura against incoming stress. Silent meditation is the paramount meditation. To reach this level there is a road map: First phase, -- oral mantra, Second phase, -- music mantra [special music] , Third phase, -- music mantra together with oral mantra, in this phase you have to conciliate oral mantra with music mantra, sometimes music mantra overtakes oral mantra, sometimes oral mantra overshadows music mantra, because mantra music works: -- sometimes on all of you [oral mantra is lost], -- sometimes on part of you [oral mantra comes back.] After these phases are completed successfully, [a good teacher is a must] you may go on silent meditation. If you are a city dweller, I recommend you to practice "music mantra", step one: practice the exercises of "flexible spine" [kundaliniyoga.com] on the music of "nadabrahma" from Osho [new earth records.com], [this music should be played softly]. Then sit "easy pose" with spine erect & listen to "the song of the sacred gong" [yogatech.com]. This music should be played very loud on a good system with a lot of 'base'. The Mind has no deffence against the Gong which works on molecular level. The Sacred Gong makes You experience the infinite within the finite. [outerself within the innerself].
