Guest guest
Sat Nam, Please, I would like some advice/tips from practitioners who have done the green diet, ie eating only green food for 10 days. Things like, what did you eat! Effects, things to watch out for or to make sure you include, etc. Many Thanks Sat Nam Blessings Har Hari Kaur Cambridge England
Guest guest
From Karta Purkh Singh, Eugene, Oregon, USA Green vegetables are widely regarded in natural medicine as the most cooling, anti-inflammatory treatments. They also happen to be detoxifying, so they work for healing and to treat symptoms. Wheat grass is especially good, but broccoli, cucumber and dark leafy greens will do the trick. Juice is the best way to get enough green vegetables in you—after all, how many cucumbers or celery stalks can you eat? If you can drink a quart of vegetable juice a day, you will rapidly detoxify. Cooling cucumber has a history in yoga for curing drug intoxication. Green vegetables treat inflamed skin with their cooling energy, which is even cooler when they are used raw. Use any green vegetable, including pea pods, celery, lettuce and sprouts. It may be the high magnesium content in the chlorophyll, which is known to cool inflammation, or some yet to be identified constituent, possibly bioflavonoids, but high amounts of green vegetables will bring acute acne, psoriasis, and dermatitis under control quickly. Because it is easy to fill up quickly on fibrous raw green vegetables, juicing is a good choice for getting in large amounts of the active ingredients. Try a couple of tall glasses of cucumber or celery juice per day. Celery Celery is profoundly detoxifying and widely considered to be the most cooling food available. Naturopathic pioneer Dr. Bernard Jensen specifically recommends it many times. Yogi Bhajan has lauded its praises for years. It is very rich in alkaline organic sodium (not sodium chloride). It is powerfully anti-inflammatory and relaxing. Since it is very fibrous, it is hard to munch down very much at a sitting. Steam it as a cooked vegetable, or better yet, juice it. Celery juice was one of our main treatments for anxiety and insomnia in Yogi Bhajan’s health teaching. Eight to sixteen ounces will put you right to sleep. It is so cooling that a 10 ounce glass will abort a hay fever attack. Believe it or not, Dr. Jensen combined prune juice with celery juice to build the nervous system. Parsley Usually discarded, that parsley is one powerful herbal medicine. While the seeds, leaf, and root of this plant are all used for food, the main herbal uses come from the leaf. This medicine has a long history of use with the urinary system. Research shows that it is diuretic, and it has a long history of herbal use in treating bladder infection. It prevents and treats kidney stones. Parsley is a treasure trove of vitamins and minerals. It is a rich source of boron and fluorine, critical minerals for bone health. It contains 3.5 times as much vitamin C as oranges, and twice as much calcium as broccoli. A dose of about 2 ounces per day of parsley juice treats edema very well. Guest guest
Sat nam, I did the green diet for 7 days and had a very positive experience. I think it's probably one of the easiest cleansing diets you can try, so it's great for someone who is new to mono diets. I ate pretty much whatever I wanted and as much as I wanted, provided that the food is naturally green on the outside or inside. This is a pretty broad rule, so everything from broccoli, cucumbers, edamame (boiled soybeans) and watermelon was fair game. Since my ayurvedic dosha is primarily vata, I need warm foods at least once a day to keep my digestive fire in balance, so I included a bowl of split pea soup and/or spicy mung bean stew, which I created by simmering ginger and onions with zucchini and celery and various spices (salt, cumin, coriander, turmeric and a touch of chili powder). Asparagus sauteed with a bit of olive oil, salt, and lime juice is also a great side or main dish. The first few days of the diet were a bit challenging because I was coming off my carbohydrate addiction, but after that I felt like I had plenty of energy. The sugar cravings came and went, but they weren't overwhelming. It was especially nice to not experience my afternoon blood sugar drop, where I would normally be reaching for chips or cookies to tide me over until dinner. The green diet really opened my eyes to how my body metabolizes fuel, and which foods are better than others for sustainable energy. In fact, even now I realize at times that I have unwittingly been eating green all day, simply because I like the taste of the foods. I think I lost about 4-5 pounds while on the diet, but I wouldn't go on it specifically to lose weight. Make sure you drink lots of water or yogi tea throughout the diet to flush out the toxins. One more thing -- and this is purely anecdotal so I make no promises -- but my friend went on the Green Diet for 10 days and soon afterwards conceived her daughter. She had been trying to conceive for several years so it was truly a blessing. Hope this helps! Nimrita K.
