Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Divine, I respectfully forward you advance notice of the observation of UNITED NATIONS DAY on OCTOBER 24th, Secretary General Ban ki moon's message and a History of the United Nations Day which includes the Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations. United Nations Day was declared in 1947 by the United Nations General Assembly to be 24th October, the anniversary of the coming into force of the Charter of the United Nations. United Nations Day recognises the United Nations Organization and all who serve and participate in this world organization. United Nations Day aims to inform the peoples of the world of the purpose and achievements of the United Nations. The United Nations is dedicated to world peace and to the betterment of humanity through a wide range of programmes from world hunger to environment and health issues. The United Nations is an instrument though which nations can identify common problems, set international standards and take action. The UN is only as strong and effective as it 193 member states make it. Citizens and Non Governmental Organizations play an essential role in building public support for the UN. Your United Nations Day observance can expand that support in your community. In 1971, the General Assembly recommended all nations to observe the United Nations Day as a Public Holiday. In Costa Rica, it is a National Holiday In Denmark, Finland and Sweden, it is a flag day In Norway, it is celebrated in many kindergartens and primary schools The President of the United States issues a proclamation (since 1946) This list is incomplete. The Office of 3HO NGO gratefully requests your participation in sharing this information with your yoga teachers, your yoga students, your communities, your ashrams, your yoga studios and centres, and with your electronic data bases. Humbly in service, Deva Kaur " More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together. And that, my friends, is why we have the United Nations " , " I believe that our world needs an instrument of global action as never before in history. I believe that the United Nations is the instrument for securing peace and for giving people everywhere, in poorer countries as in richer, a real stake in that peace by promoting development and encouraging cooperation. But the United Nations is only an instrument, an actor in need of props and cues from its directors. And so I will paraphrase Winston Churchill: Give us the tools - the trust, the authority and the means - and we will do the job " , Former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan " The United Nations is our one great hope for a peaceful and free world " , Ralph J. Bunche, advisor to the U.S delegation for the " Charter Conference " of the United Nations held in 1945, closely involved in drafting the Charter of the United Nations, instrumental in the creation and adoption of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950. " Everything will be alright - you know when? When people, just people, stop thinking of the United Nations as a weird Picasso abstraction and see it as a drawing they made themselves " , Second Secretary General of the United Nations, Dag Hammerskjold.
