Sa-Ta-Na-Ma -And why not? One could hire a whole group of talented musicians to play and chant while one chanted along. A whole orchestra even. I know that you are thinking in terms of an easy technological equivalent like a cd or mp3 player and only say this to help you imagine the direction this could be heading.

I have never heard Yogiji teach Kirtan Kriya as a meditation to be chanted as accompaniment to anything recorded or otherwise. " Kirtan " means music of the soul. I suggest, as a yogi, you lift up your voice and sing to the cosmos and hear what you hear in turn.

Divine love and blessings to you.

satnamI don't believe there is any reason why kirtan kriya could not be accompanied by a musical version. The things to pay attention to, which may be difficult to find in a version not created specifically for this purpose, would be honoring the consistent repetition of the mantra, and the meditator staying focused on the mantra-not so much the music. Music done well for this purpose would provide support to your efforts to stay focused. To paraphrase my old fiend Jot Singh on this kirtan

kriya thing " It's not the tune you listen to that

matters, it's the meditation that you bring to it. "

(He-he)

Anyway, the important thing is to meditate. Sometimes

we meditate in silence, sometime to our own voices,

and sometimes with others. This is just life folks!

It's a test, this is ONLY a test. Treat it with good

humor and love. It will return the same, on time and

in abundance.

Love.

Actually, I’ve heard at

least one recording of music with Kirtan Kriya but I don’t remember who

it was by or where it is available. I’ve taught Kirtan Kriya for the last

30 years with guitar accompaniment and played with other musicians while it has

been chanted. And maybe someday, we’ll have an orchestra! Yogi Bhajan

didn’t teach the RaMaDaSa healing meditation with music but there are

many beautiful arrangements (including the Pachelbel Canon) that really get the

energy moving. It’s always been my belief and practice that appropriate music

can introduce Naad Yoga and the science of chanting to students and deepen and enhance the experience for us ‘yogis’.

Yogi Bhajan said that music is the manifestation of the unmanifested. It takes

us beyond time and space in an instant. There’s always the time and place

for chanting ‘a capella’ as well as with music. I’d say this

is a ‘whatever floats your boat’ issue.

There is a CD 'Sa Ta Na M'a, that has 2 versions, both you can use

for Kirtan Kriya.

the first is straight forward 'Sa Ta Na Ma' made for this meditation

and even continues the music for a time without

the mantra during the silent part of the meditation.

The second version was originally made at the request of Yogi Bhajan

for a White Tantric

Yoga course, he was asked if this one could be used for the Kirtan

Kriya Meditation he said

'Yes " .

This Cd is available at http://www.spiritvoyage.com/shopping/

I suppose it can, but I would stick to doing it straight without music. Your own voice provides the music - an art of listening. If music is used, make sure it doesn't distract you from the meditative experience into a musical experience. A simple replica of the chanting notes would probably be okay, with a little tabla for the beat. But I'd leave out the tubas and electric guitars. And silence for the silent section, PLEASE!

I did kirtan kriya twice daily for months with wahe guru kaur's (now

known as Wah) audiocassette around 2000. They never transferred it to

cd but they may still sell the cassetes at A-healing and she does

continue the music during the silent part. I found it to be quite

helpful. My husband played his version at the opening of Golden

Bridge NYC last January and the class seemed to like it that way..so

acapella or music works for me..

Well, the tuba can have a very

sweet sound if played well and a Stratocaster guitar with a tube amp can put

one into the bliss! Bagpipes or kettle drums may be pushing it though! It’s really a matter of personal

preference. A lot of Baroque and Classical music has a perfect Breath of Fire rhythm

– I’ve never used it in teaching but do it all the time in my

personal practice. You never know where inspiration lies.

I found that when teaching Kirtan

Kriya, especially beginners, it’s more effective to play guitar, even in

the silent section, so students can keep their concentration and rhythm and not

be distracted. I think we need to find what really works for ourselves and teach

accordingly while always maintaining the integrity of the teachings.
