Guest guest
Sat Nam, I most probably bought this cd in 2006 when I was trying to find out how to pronounce certain mantras, Mool in this case, I think. I would like to know what are these mantras, when and where are they used? Guest guest
Sat Nam Sat Avtar Kaur, These are actually titles of sections of the Sikh banis (prayers). Most of these banis are found in the Sikh Scriptures, the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. Those written by Guru Gobind Singh are found in the Dasam Granth (or perhaps other text written by Guru Gobind Singh). The 'titles' that you've typed below identify the title of the bani itself or the next subsection of the bani. The Siri Guru Granth Sahib was written in certain musical scales called 'Raags'. There are 31 Raags represented in the scriptures. Therefore, when you see 'Raag Gaoree Poorbee Maihalaa Panjvaan', this is communicating that " This section is written in the scale of 'Raag Gaoree Poorbee' and it was composed by the 5th Sikh Guru (Guru Arjan Dev Ji). " 'Panjvaan' means 'five'. Therefore, if you were going to sing this section and get the best effect (in the science of Naad Yoga and sound), you would do so in the scale of Gaoree Poorbee. Make sense? Another example: " So Dar Raag Asaa Maihalaa Paihalaa/Rehras Sahib " This is introducing the bani called 'Rehras Sahib' which is the evening prayer of the Sikhs. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to read. This is composed (at least the 1st section) in the scale of 'Asaa' -- which is like a major scale in Western music. The difference is that you focus on certain notes and combination of notes in the classical Indian scale. When your recite Rehras Sahib, however, you generally just read it -- not sing it in a scale. But, if you wanted to sing that section, you could do so in Raag Asaa. Therefore, what you have written below is a compilation of titles of either full banis themselves or subsections within the banis. This is how the Siri Guru Granth Sahib is organized. In answer to your other question -- when and where are the banis/prayers used: Remember that what you wrote below includes both the names of the full prayers and also the subsections. The prayers themselves are read at different times -- Japji Sahib is first thing in the morning. Jaap Sahib, Anand Sahib, Tav Prasad Svaiyaa are all morning prayers. Rehras is in the evening (like between 5 and 7). Kirtan Sohila at night. In Kundalini Yoga, we use various parts of these prayers as mantras which are chanted or recited whenever the meditation says it should be. Usually, in mantra, there isn't a certain time that you use them -- pretty much any time. A few examples of mantras within banis: Mool mantra is part of Japji (the very first part). Ek Achree Chand (Ajai Alai..)is part of Jaap Sahib--near the end. Rakhe Rakhanhaar is part of Rehras Sahib -- at the very end. Someone else also answered this question and suggested that, if you want to dig into this further, find someone in the local community who is familiar with banis. That's a great suggestion. Certainly, you can also ask more questions on line like this. Hope this was helpful! Guest guest
Sat Nam, These are 3 of the morning Bani's (Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Tav Prasaad Svaiye), the evening Bani (Rehiras Sahib) and the Bani which is recited before bedtime (Kirtan Sohila). Rajnarind Kaur created a CD in which each section of the bani's is placed on a separate track. She did this so that people could work on the pronunciation of individual sections of each Bani. This CD's primary purpose is that of a learning tool. In General these bani's are recited completely in the above order at the above mentioned times. However, Siri Singh Sahib Ji did give specific sections of these larger bani's which could be used as mantras. And in fact many of the mantras used in Kundalini Yoga/Meditation are short sections which are contained within these larger bani's. For example, Gobinde Mukhande Udare Apaare...is contained within Jaap Sahib...Rakhe Rakhanhaar Aap Ubariaan...is the last " section " of Rehiras Sahib...just to name a few. I hope that this has helped to answer your questions. Guest guest
These are the titles to sections of Banis - "Rag" means a particular scale in music to create a particular effect or be played at a certain time of day or season. The word directly following "Rag" is the name of the particular Rag, as each Rag has a name. "Mehela" means house, and the words following mehela are numbers. "Mehela Chauthha" translates as Fourth House, or loosely "Fourth Guru". A Pauri is a step, or verse. The phrases with Chhand are from Jaap Sahib, composed by Guru Gobind Singh. I don't know the exact translation but they are the titles of the verses that follow. Aasaa is also the name of a Raag. Doharaa and Svayae are titles of verses - I don''t know the meanings. Same with Kabiyo Baach Bayntee Chaupa-ee. I hope that helps. Blessings, GuruSangat Kaur, VA
Guest guest
Sat Nam. They are not actually mantras, aside from the Mool Mantra listing. Most of the words and phrases refer to sections of Gurbaanee from the Shabd Guru and from the Dasam Granth. There is some guidance on terminology offered here: http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php?title=Structure_of_SGGSBlessings abounding...Guru Fatha Singh http://www.gurufathasingh.com
