Guest guest
Hello! I am a young man, 21, who has been studying KY for a couple of months now and joined this group just today. My instructor has told me that Yogiji recommended a program where you get up at four in the morning, practice, and if needed, take a small nap before going out into the world. This seems to have worked for a lot of people, but I am still operating on a schedule where I stay up until midnight and need my six - seven hours of sleep. The reason for this is that I like to be awake and do things during the night - not necessarily go out and party, sometimes I just read. I am not sure how easy it would be for me to make the commitment to go to bed at nine, ten o'clock and wake up at four. Would it be better for me to retire earlier, or would it still be possible for me to go to bed early in the morning? I heard that eventually, after practicing KY for a while, you get to a point where you need less sleep. To what extent is this true?
Guest guest
Sat Nam, your last remark is the most relevant to me. The more you practice KY the less sleep you will need. The first reason is that KY enables you to relax more effectively and thus get to a deeper and more restorative sleep. Much of our sleep time is spent entering and exiting that deeply relaxed state. This is where we toss and turn and dream and all this exhausts us on a lot of levels. A deep yogic sleep is brief yet restful because you exercise and meditate in a disciplined way. All that being said, if you enjoy KY then by all means fit that practice to your schedule. It is more important that you DO the yoga and the meditation rather than what time of the day you do it. What happens if you exercise and meditate before you go to bed? Or, what if you practiced whenever you do wake up? Doing the yoga is more important than when you do it. After a while, all that yoga and meditation will " change " your head and how you think of your habits and schedule. At your own pace you will probably change and look into the early morning practice as more practical. Sadhana is a demonstration of your commitment to your spiritual progress. You enjoy KY so continue to do it. That will provide you with the wisdom and knowledge you need to have to continue on your path, whatever that may be. Sat Nam. Guest guest
Hello Friend! I've been practicing KY for three months shy of three years and I have a very serious, and heavy-duty sadhana, by all accounts. It just gets better and better on many fronts. Try these things you are talking about, is my " advice " , up to the point that you can tolerate. Push yourself sometimes, slack in some other areas. Learn from experience. Be conscious, and caring. Good things come to those who are diligent, to those who are sincere. It's easy for many in any endeavor, to make just a small effort, wish they could do more, but are lazy. I'm fortunate, I guess, I love to exercise, and I am thrilled by the results of KY. I have heard from a teacher that she knows for a fact that some teachers do not even have a sadhana, and from the looks of things, that's not surprising. Sadhana is crucial for me, and a joy to do. Today my neighbor's music woke me around 3am. I'm up and running, (and writing), and will shortly begin my practice. YogiJi did and does recommend early to rise, see how it works for you. Go all the way, Brother Karam
