Sat Nam,

I don't quite know how to ask this, but if one is doing the AQ morning

Sadhana and one wishes to add the Sikh morning 'prayer's in, how is

that done? Is the Sadhana dropped and the Sikh prayers take its

place? or is it incorporated? or is Sadhana done later in the day? or

what?

I feel totally confused. And, I just got a real deal on 2 cd's with

the morning and evening prayers, so what am I to do?

Thank you all in advance,

Sat Avtar Kaur

Sat Nam!

In addition to your question I would like to know: WHAT are the

correct times for the different prayers? I think I ordered the same CD

with the intention to take up reciting the morning and evening prayers

daily :D

Concerning morning sadhana: as far as I know we start with Japji at

4am. Then you do the kriya+7 mantras. I think the other morning

prayer(s) can be done after this? But as I said, I am not sure about

the times for the different prayers...

Sat Adesh Kaur,

We were taught that Sadhana should be started 2 and one half hours

before Sunrise. This is the model we are given by Yogi Bhajan ji. The

idea of beginning Sadhana at 4am (it's actually 3:40am) is that on the

Equinox or at the Equator, the sunrises at roughly 6am and sets at roughly 6pm.... the day and nights are equal in

length. If we could live

our lives in a more natural way,

where we tuned into the energies and the flow of the natural cycles, we

would use "time" only as a guideline and not as a fixed point. My reasoning on this is that the "time" of

sunrise changes with the seasons and also with what Latitude you live

at. In many places we are also thrown a loop every Spring and Autumn

with "Daylight Savings Time".

As the Summer Solstice approaches, the time of Sunrise gets earlier

and earlier, to the point where, in many communities are, the Sun is

rising at a point squarely in the middle of Sadhana. It seems that we

could have some discussion around this as the codifiers of this sacred

technology probably didn't have to deal with these questions of "Daylight Savings Time"

or of people practicing yoga in Delhi, NY or Fairbanks, AK where the

sun actually rises at 2:57am in late June (in Dec. it rises at

10:59am!).

One other touchstone to keep in mind when thinking about Sadhana

times, is to look at the daily cycles as put forth in Vedic Philosophy,

or Ayurveda. Ayurveda is applied Yogic Science, and Yoga is applied

Vedic Science. They are flip sides of the same coin. It is taught that

yoga/meditation is best done between 2am and 6am, at a time when Vata

dosha and the Ether element is strongest, and the veil between our ego

and the Infinite is thinnest. Any practice at this time is "ten times"

more powerful than at other times. Merging is easy.

This is more than you probably wanted to think about, but it is good to

understand the roots of the teachings.

Many questions on Sadhana are addressed at www.amritvela.org

I'm curious what others would have to say on this.

Someone else will also have to address your question regarding

recitation of the Banis.
