Yoga teachers, health professionals, individuals with addictive behaviours. General Course Description: Introduction to the history and benefits of using Kundalini Yoga and meditation in addiction recovery. Learn how Kundalini Yoga and meditation can work in addiction recovery: 1) effects on the glandular system (i.e. regulating cortisol; balancing the hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal); 2) effects on neurotransmitter function and the brain reward pathway (i.e. increase in dopamine and serotonin); 3) ability to connect individual to spiritual identity through experiential exercises; 4) ability to alter habitual thought patterns through breath and mantra; 5) activation of the frontal lobe of the brain to decrease impulsive behaviour; 6) improvement in detoxification Understand the importance of the breath in regulating thought patterns. Practice simple breathing exercises (pranayams) that can help control cravings. Practice specific Kundalini Yoga and meditation techniques that may help to break the addictive cycle and cause a shift in one's mental/emotional state. Develop an understanding of simple naturopathic therapies to assist in drug and alcohol detoxification Develop an understanding of specific foods, nutrients and herbs that are needed for neurotransmitter balance, adrenal support, nervous system strength The components of the program include: Kundalini Yoga Breathing Techniques Meditation Relaxation Lifestyle Changes and Stress Management Hydrotherapy Nutritional supplementation Detoxification protocols Self-reflection: journaling, reading assignments, home study Selfless service Peer Support Community Support The program can be run over 16 weeks and includes weekly three hour meetings with specific themes, yoga sets, breathing exercises, meditations, and background material derived from the teachings of Yogi Bhajan. The course is divided into three sections focused on: 1) healing and clearing the past; 2) living in the present; 3) creating one’s future. This course is designed for individuals seeking to overcome addictive behaviour, for health professionals who work with addiction and for certified Kundalini Yoga teachers who would like to teach a yoga-based addiction recovery program. It will be taught in 2 streams in 2008: 1) in Toronto over four weekends beginning May 30, 31, June 1, 2008; 3) in Owen Sound over 16 weeks beginning Sept. 22, 2008.
