avoiding colds by avoiding dairy

I am responding to the DC area person's question about natural ways to avoid colds. I went for about 9 months without getting a cold, and the thing I attribute it to is that I was avoiding dairy foods. I eat goat yogurt from time to time which is the easiest dairy food on the human body as far as i know, and occaisionally (rarely) I'll eat aged cheddar. I really try to avoid cooked cheese like on pizza, because the cheese seems more dead, whereas the uncooked cheddar, even if pasteurized still has some enzymes in it that help with digesting it. And why do I choose aged cheddar? It is a tastey allowance I sometimes eat and the aging process gets rid of lactose which is something many humans have trouble digesting.

Many vegans i have known always said they do not get sick. and they say if they slip up and eat dairy they do get sick. so I went with my nearly non-dairy experiment since last fall when I felt a little run down at the beginning of October and I did not get sick at all in the winter, and I usually in the past would get at least one cold in the winter. I got a bit sloppy and allowed more cheese this summer and I did get a cold a week or two ago so I'm being more careful again. I think my experiment confirms what the vegans say about dairy and colds. Bridget Kamke, LMTKundalini Yoga TeacherLicensed Massage TherapistChildren's Book Authorwww.infinipede.com

While I understand, and while I have seen people respond well to, lack of dairy or eliminating dairy - my response is in support of dairy. I do believe there are people who can do dairy without any problems or negative effects. I'm one of those people. I also do goat milk and yogurt from time to time. It's not any easier to digest than cow's milk/yogurt. I do believe it has a lot to do with your blood type, which I have researched and tested thoroughly over many years. I am a B blood type and do dairy on a day to day basis. My husband, however, is an O type and cannot do dairy. When he does, he gets sick, but it is usually intestinal and not a cold. He is much better off doing soy milk. I, however, should not do soy products as a B blood type, and interestingly enough I found out many years ago (quite by accident) that I have a soy allergy. My throat closes up! Scary. I have been doing dairy all my life and have never had a problem from using dairy, nor have I had frequent colds. I do buy all organic dairy. I do believe that "colds" come from a virus, some airborne - some bacterial; but I don't see how a cold can come from dairy. I can see how some people can develop candida and yeast problems from dairy - if they are not meant to eat dairy - but not candida and yeast infections. An infection comes from bacteria.

So - in support of dairy, I am wondering if there are Sikhs here who consume dairy without problems? I know many Sikhs who are not Vegan and do quite well, so I'm just wondering what other Sikhs in this forum say about this?

Dear Guru Beant Kaur and Others Who are Interested in Staying Healthy,

There's another way to avoid colds besides avoiding dairy. Because I

love occasional dairy and have chosen not to stop eating it, I try to

eat the BST hormone free and organic dairy whenever possible. I rarely

get sick (knock on wood) mostly, I think, because I brush my tongue

daily with alum & salt in the morning after brushing my teeth and hack

out the junk by tickling the monkey glands with my alum/salt coated

toothbrush (flossing daily doesn't hurt either). My mouth feels

sooooooooooooo fresh and clean afterward and if you double up with 3

minutes of Breath of Fire to burn the mucous out, it seems to be pretty

effective to avoid colds. I highly recommend both of those KY

techniques for anyone out there who gets sick. It's difficult for germs

to thrive in the alum/salt environment and along with BOF, it seems to

help the keep the mucous at bay. Besides wouldn't want to lose the glow

by stopping dairy completely. Love & Light, Atma Kaur

Satnam all,

I don't believe there are hard/fast rules that apply to everyone

regarding cows milk dairy products. Yogiji seemed to enjoy them,

recommend them in his recipes and evidently had no " lactose

intolerance. " I think that if one is going to eat cows milk dairy

products (cmdp) then organic is best. I found out, over 3 decades ago,

that I seem to do better without any cmdp. Back then, as I was

transitioning with my diet and learning about what foods were good for

me, I found cmdp gave me a lot of mucus that frequently led to colds.

I began using lots of soy products, continued for years and found that

I did better without cmdp. Then I began hearing/reading things about

soy products that were conflicting and so have transitioned for some

years now to using rice milks, goats milk yogurt and occasionally goat

cheeses-this all seems to suit me quite well. I am a believer that

each must find their way with food and diet. Blessings to all,

Jot Singh
