As householders political involvement is quite appropriate for the yogi. The kinds of politics, indeed, that creative souls may find interesting are those areas affecting the conscious lifestyle. Organic eating is one such area, and natural living is consistently under attack by the regulators whose agenda is always set by Big Agriculture and Big Pharmaceutical corporations. Below, then, is one of the countless opportunities to fight on behalf of natural growers, and against the latest frankenfood of the Huge International Conglomerates.Blessings,Amar Atma----- Forwarded Message

Tell USDA: No GE Papaya!

October 31, 2008

Dear Charles,

Tell USDA: No GE Papaya!

The US Department of Agriculture is considering a petition to allow genetically engineered papaya trees to be commercially grown and sold in Florida. This would be the first time this genetically engineered crop would be grown commercially in the mainland United States. If the agency approves this petition, it would remove all regulatory oversight of this type of genetically engineered tree.

Tell the USDA that consumers don't want GE papayas!

The USDA admits that pollen from these GE papaya trees can contaminate other papaya trees, including trees being raised organically. The proposed buffer zones between GE papaya and other papayas will not prevent genetic contamination from being spread by pollinating insects and the wind. In Hawaii, the commercialization of GE papaya has caused extensive contamination of organic, conventional and wild papaya groves on most of the Hawaiian Islands in just a few years - far quicker than the USDA predicted.

And to make matters worse, USDA has not studied possible risks GE papayas could pose to consumers, including allergic reactions.

Sincerely,

The Food Team
