Guest guest
weight loss Posted by: " Laura " laura-valle laurajvalle Tue Dec 4, 2007 11:52 am (PST) ------------------- Hi Laura Your challenges are similar to ones I faced when I started practicing ashtanga, except I only needed to lose an additional 10 lbs. I had already lost 30 earlier. So I started a practice of restricting calories while watching my nutrition closely. I have written about my experiences in my blog and maybe it could be useful to you. You can find it by googling " arturo yoga cron blog " . CRON stands for calorie restriction optimal nutrition. There are links to online resources to help you as well. I'm also vegetarian. Guest guest
Hi Laura: As a rule of thumb, yoga (or any other " exercise " ) per se will not prove effective for weight loss. Bottom line you must burn more calories per day than you intake. Best estimates to date -- vigorous vinyasa practice burns about 5-7 calories/minute. Thus typical primary series burns about 300-500 cal. Doesn't take much food to replace 300-500 cal. That being said, exercise can be effective if used in combination with dietary monitoring/restriction. -tom On Dec 5, 2007 4:59 AM, Arturo Veve <volae wrote: > weight loss > Posted by: " Laura " laura-valle <laura-valle%40ouhsc.edu>laurajvalle > Tue Dec 4, 2007 11:52 am (PST) > > ------------------- > > Hi Laura > Your challenges are similar to ones I faced when I started practicing > ashtanga, except I only needed to lose an additional 10 lbs. Guest guest
I've been practicing Ashtanga for five years now. Over three years I gained over 30 pounds due to menopause and having been on drugs to cure pneumonia. I had not been losing the weight, so last Spring I bought a treadmill and began running 4 miles a day. I also did a few juice fasts and committed to a vegan diet for a month (sorry but I just can't live that way). In six months I lost 25 pounds. I continued my Ashtanga practice three times a week during this time. While I love Ashtanga and feel that it helps control weight and is great for stretching and toning, I don't think that it alone would help you lose a great deal of weight quickly. You may want to try a detox diet. Someone recommended it to me, explaining that toxins are often stored in fat and that until the toxins are released your body does not want to release the stored fat. I don't know if this is true or not, but after working for months to lose weight with little success, that pounds began to shed off after I did the juice fast detox and then spent a month on an organic vegan diet. I'm still trying to lose another ten pounds which is now going slowly. If I'm still struggling after the holidays, I'm planning on trying another detox to see if it will help. Guest guest
I did do a 2 week detox and do a healthy vegetarian diet (Eat to Live) and so I guess I'll just need to up my cardio on my days off from Ashtanga like you did. Thanks for your input and for sharing your experience with me! It helps me to know in what direction I need to be going! Laura J. Guest guest
No there is a risk of kidney stones when you loose that much weight that fast. There is a lot of waste involved with fat metabolism especially if your loosing a lot. The process also takes up extra water. its easy to dehydrate and run into problems. > > think it is a myth that we have to drink 2 -3 litres of water a day. > > james <jamesbrad71 wrote:hey there > The people I have taught one man who started a self practice week > lost 3 kgs in 3 weeks, alot of people loose wieght but really is very > well needed is to see a nutritionalist if you are going to maintain > the practice, if you miss one thing in the web of nutrients then the > web can fall apart and inflame other issues, and drink loads of water > 2-3 litres a day as a basic, it will redifine your body completely > aswell, changing the muscle structure to tighter more compact muscle! > blessing in you practice > james > >
