Guest guest
Sat Nam, Question: When meditating, it is often specified that the eyes focus on the tip of the nose and that they should be closed 9/10th. Sometimes when there’s a fair bit of light, I find I’d rather close my eyes but I thought perhaps the point of the 9/10 is to let a little visual stimulus in so one doesn’t totally space out. Anyway, I’m curious as to any collective knowledge on this. Also, does staring up at the brow point have the same effect as down at the nose? And is (trying!) to stare at the chin like the super powered version of staring at the nose or something entirely different? Thanks in advanced for the input... Guest guest
Sat Nam ji, As far as I understand it, all of the visual focus points are just like locks. You lock your eyes into a position on the tip of the nose because once you are there, the eyes cannot go anywhere else. This stimulates a particular part of the optic nerve, touching on the pituitary, allowing for whatever mantra and vibration you use to cut right to the appropriate part of your brain without any interruption. So, when you take a steady asana, or you lock your fingers together, or pull a root lock, neck lock, or focus on the third eye point or nose, or plant your tongue to the roof of your mouth, (or do all of them at the same time, as we tend to do) you are essentially creating specific and controlled channels for prana and vibrations (naam) to flow through your physical and energetic bodies to produce alignments and changes in your psyche, soul and body. Another way to look at it is that it's an asana (comfortable seat) for your eyes! So keep them rooted, steady, calm and relaxed. Specifically, the reason you keep the eyes 9/10th closed (or 1/10th open, depending on if you are a pessimist or an optimist is so that the eyes do not move once you establish your focus point. Guest guest
Sat nam The eyes closed 9/10ths, from what I understand, is a more grounding eye position. It is a challenge, I agree, to keep them open sometimes when eyes closed would feel more natural. I think with your eyes closed they would drift up. Staring at the tip of the nose and at the third eye point have different effects for sure. I'd say putting it simply the thrid eye one is more of a upper chakra position, raising the energy. toward the nose, more grounding. chin? I have not done one of this in a long time. Maybe once. I figure it may be somewhat grounding but also have to do with the " moon center " in the chin. Because we humans tend to hang out in our lower chakras, in our survivial interests a lot, there's a huge focus on raising the energy in Kundalini yoga. We get in a real habit of pulling the energy up. But we must also draw energy back down. The Kundalini does flow up and then cycle back down. Evidence of too much up and not enough down/grounding flow would be an inability to manifest stuff easily in this life. So, for instance, I am working on being more and more present in my hips, lower chakras, etc, and really anchoring the energy back down to Earth so I can create stuff, and so I can be present in my body, bringing the spiritual consciousness in and really grounding it. So for those purposes, I can see meditations with the eyes focused on the tip of the nose and 9/10ths closed being beneficial, for instance. Guest guest
Sat Nam, The Aquarian Teacher manual says 3rd eye focus stimulates the pituitary, intuition. Tip of the nose focus stimulates the pineal gland and frontal lobe of the brain. Moon center focus is cooling and calming. Crown chakra stimulates the pineal gland and crown chakra. The reason for 1/10th open is to stimulate the optic nerve a little so you don't shut down. Makes you calm and develops intiution.
