Hi. I was never diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, but I did have Epstein

Barr (like mononucleosis, which i also had as a child) and candidiasis

(overproliferation of yeast in my intestines, and not enough friendly bacteria,

which leads to fatigue). I was so tired at the worst of my illness that I could

only do one thing a day, such as an errand, a very short shift at the bakery

where I worked, or see a movie. One thing and then I'd be exhausted. Finally,

I learned i had candidiasis and I went to ta talented

kinesiologist/herbalist/nutritionist who taught me how to eat (avoiding all

sugars for a long time) and told me what herbs to take. (FYI my family doctor

at the time had said something like Rest, and eventually get better). I am so

glad I found my herbalist because I was not getting my full energy level or

health back after almost a year of waiting. With my herbalist and the dietary

changes, I quickly improved.

As an LMT and yogi and an observant person, I have noticed a correlation between

fatigue illnesses and certain emotional patterns. For me personally, the

mononucleosis, the Epstein Barr and the candidiasis all had to do with not

moving forward in life, holding onto something or someone, or suppressing

emotions i did not want to let myself feel. I noticed when my step-mom and my

dad divorced, my step-mom got fibromyalgia, another fatigue illness and it

correlated with her fear of moving forward in life without my Dad after 15

years, even though she divorced him. So have your friend take an honest look at

her life. Also, I started Kundalini yoga a little while after i got on the

candida diet and it helped me heal too, especially since it heals on so many

levels. It is empowering to learn to eat healthily and have a yoga practice.

Of course your friend should start slowly with her practice and increase the

level of challenge so as not to overdo. All this self-care is so much more

effective than what you can get from a visit to a health care practicioner. The

healing that lasts comes from the self-care practices we adopt. This is a great

opportunity for your friend.

I thank everyone for sending info on CFS. It seems that as with many dis - ease situation in the body, it could be combination of factors, physical and emotional. I will explain these to my friend and am sure she will benefit from all your experiences. It's also worth for me to notice that its no wonder that doctors dont really know what to do with it. ie no short cuts, but something that has to be healed by the person over time with diets, emotional understanding of whats going on and some kind of a yoga practice. Sincere thanksSat Nam to allLeila

Helping

to Heal Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with Kundalini Yoga

by

Devinder Kaur

In March 2006 a very dear student approached me after a

Yoga class I taught to see if I would be interested in teaching a friend

private yoga classes.  She explained that her friend was recovering from a

fatigue type disorder and is living in a senior’s Care Facility because

she could no longer live alone.  She told me her friend is a lawyer in her

40’s and had been ill for just over a year but was starting to gain more

strength.  They believed that yoga and meditation would help.

The next day I called Hélène.  We talked for a few

minutes about how she is feeling.  She told me that the doctors were not really

sure what her condition is but she had a number of symptoms that point towards

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).  At the end of the call we agreed to meet that

weekend.

Our first meeting was very short.  I wanted to see Hélène

in person to understand how much strength and stamina she had or in this case

didn’t have.  I also wanted to better understand the condition.

The year before I met Hélène, she had been to see

numerous doctors from GPs to specialists from all areas of medicine.  She had

been through a battery of blood tests, x-rays, and examinations.  She had

radically changed her diet, done a lot of detoxification on the advice of her

doctor, who is a specialist in environmental medicine, and was going through

the process of identifying what supplements her body could tolerate because all

of her body’s systems were extremely fragile.

After our first meeting I went home and started to

research what Kundalini Yoga kriyas and meditations we could use, bearing in

mind that Hélène had a very difficult time to walk from her room at the

senior’s Care Facility to the front door to greet me.  She did not have

the strength after our meeting to walk me back to the front door.  Also, during

our first meeting I noticed she had a difficult time to hold her head up while

sitting.  She spent the time leaning back in a recliner chair, which is where

she spent most of her days.

One of my main questions to Hélène in the beginning and

during most of our classes was what do you think caused the condition?  Putting

what the doctors said aside, what do you think caused this to happen to you?

We discussed several possibilities such as physical and mental burn out, severe

allergic reactions, dental complications and infections, lyme disease.  In the

end we decided it didn’t matter what you call it.  The fact is that her

health needed to be restored and it was going to happen.

At our second meeting we started the ‘Meditation

for Self Renewal’.  This meditation is recommended to be done for 11

minutes.  Knowing that 11 minutes would be too long for Hélène, together, that

day, sitting in Easy Pose on the floor in her room at the Care Facility we

started doing the meditation by doing holding the posture for 20 - 30 seconds.

That was long enough.  It was a challenging meditation.  In the beginning,

after our weekly class Hélène was exhausted for the rest of the day.  It would

take 3 days for her to recover from the class with the third day being the most

diffiuclt.

Hélène continued to practise the meditation every day

gradually increasing the time when she was able.  We continued to meet weekly

and when Hélène was able, we added other Kundalini Yoga tools such as the kriya

“Getting the Body out of Distress”, Kirtan Kriya and drinks like

Yogi Tea and Golden Milk.  To start, we would practise the kriyas with the

postures modified and the times reduced to amounts Hélène could manage.  For

example, she started Kirtan Kriya lying down in her bed before falling asleep.

Over the coming months, Hélène increased her timing of

‘Meditation for Self Renewal’ to 11 minutes.  Ninety days after

starting ‘Meditation for Self Renewal’ Hélène felt strong enough to

move out of the Care Facility to live at a friend’s house.

We continued to meet weekly while Hélène lived at her

friend’s house.  With the move, her Doctors were worried about a relapse

so we proceeded carefully.  Over the course of the next year and a half, my

research also continued.  We tried are variety of kriyas and meditations that

worked on building the nervous system and immune system.  I contacted Dr.

Shanti Shanti Kaur and ordered her video tapes on chronic disease.  We watched

the tapes and we integrated more techniques such as chanting mantras, different

pranayams and Gong Meditations.  Hélène was open to try it all.  I also found

David Shannahoff-Khalsa’s book which included a kriya for CFS.  We

started this kriya in our weekly classes with the timing reduced to 27 minutes.

After discussion we decided to stop ‘Meditation for

Self Renewal’ and add ‘Meditation for Self Authority’ and

‘Bound Lotus Kriya’ with modified postures and timings.  In June

2007, Hélène began to go back to work by working 6 hours per week divided

across 3 days.  Also, at this time, Hélène added physiotherapy as required by

her disability plan and started driving a car again, albeit short distances,

but the freedom was wonderful.

Sixteen months after moving into her friend’s

house, Hélène was feeling stronger.  With the help of friends and family Hélène

moved into her own home.  We continued our classes but began to focus more

specifically on ‘Kriya for CFS’, ‘Bound Lotus Kriya’

and Gong Meditations.  To help concentrate the benefits of sound therapy Hélène

began listening to my Gong CD “Echo” on a low volume while she

sleeps.  Soon after, Hélène began to increase her working hours and throughout

this time continued to work with her Doctors and the exercises provided by her

physiotherapist.

In March 2008 we celebrated 2 years of working together.

Hélène is feeling stronger.  She is now working 17 hours a week and practising

35 minutes of yoga and meditation each day.  Sure, some days are better than

others but we now laugh with amazement when we think of starting with 20 - 30

seconds of ‘Meditation for Self Renewal’.  We are grateful for the

changes and healing.  Both Hélène and I deeply believe and know that she could

not have come this far without the daily support of Kundalini Yoga.

Hélène says “Kundalini Yoga has had such a profound

effect on me; it is the best thing that has ever happened to me.  Even before

people noticed that I was improving, I felt stronger and I knew that something

was happening.  It has allowed me to take charge of my recovery, giving me

precious tools to overcome this condition, whatever it may be.  Although I am

far from being back at 100%, I am serene and trust my health will completely

return in due time.  Thank you.”

The next steps for Hélène include investigation of

mercury poisoning from dental work and of course, more yoga and meditation

every day.

Since meeting Hélène, I have been approached by many

women with CFS, ME, Fibromyalgia and other ‘un-named’ fatigue

related problems.  My recommendation is to start with ‘Meditation for

Self Renewal’ and expand from there – start small and build-up

little by little.
