Guest guest
Sat Nam:Recently, in a class, a student brought up a question regarding "addiction to negativity." I am trying to get a sense of what this means. From what I understand, a person can develop a chemical dependency on, say, anger or self-criticism, because those emotions are producing a much-needed shot of adrenaline? I would love to find out what goes on biochemically when a person berates himself, or constantly self-sabotages himself, etc. My former husband used to comment on how 'peaceful' he felt after a raging temper tantrum. Was he feeding an addiction? Or what about the person who feels calm after he swears? What’s the chemical that one would be addicted to? I've often head that a person gets a 'pay-off' from a negative emotion, but I've never understood exactly what that meant. I never understood how anyone could 'benefit' from self-hatred. Obviously, I want to help this student. Are there perhaps books or websites I could steer her to? In the meantime I will work hard to educate myself on this topic. Thanks in advance and blessings. In Gratitude--Adi Shakti
Guest guest
Sat nam, You should check out the movie, What the Bleep do we know... It goes into detail but in an understandable way about how we repeat negative patterns like self-criticism and why. Then recommend it to your student. As for getting a pay off from negative emotions, playing the victim is a good example. People have the payoff of not being responsible. Of course, if they see the cost, maybe they'd find a new way of being. I took classes with Landmark Education Corporation and dropped a bunch of my negative and self-limiting stuff. in fact, I was deep in my Kundalini practice at that time too and they worked together synergistically.
