I am a new student to Kundalini Yoga and have been studying Sikhism, as well.

The more I study the Sri GGSJ, the more interested I become.

I'm wondering the correct way to read the Sri GGSJ and how the numbers and

pauses are used during the readings so I may study correctly as intended.

Example of reading below......

Wahe Guru,

Woodstock Singh

DHANAASAREE, FIFTH MEHL:

Granting His Grace, God has blessed me with His Name, and released me of my

bonds. I have forgotten all worldly entanglements, and I am attached to the

Guru's feet. || 1 || In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I have

renounced my other cares and anxieties. I dug a deep pit, and buried my

egotistical pride, emotional attachment and the desires of my mind. || 1 ||

Pause || No one is my enemy, and I am no one's enemy. God, who expanded His

expanse, is within all; I learned this from the True Guru. || 2 || I am a friend

to all; I am everyone's friend. When the sense of separation was removed from my

mind, then I was united with the Lord, my King. || 3 || My stubbornness is gone,

Ambrosial Nectar rains down, and the Word of the Guru's Shabad seems so sweet to

me. He is pervading everywhere, in the water, on the land and in the sky; Nanak

beholds the all-pervading Lord. || 4 || 3 ||

In the selection you have below, "Dhanaasaree" is the raag (relates to the melody), and "Fifth Mehl" relates to the author, the fifth master (Guru) Arjan. Of the two "1's" you see, one refers to the asthaaee (or chorus) and the other "1" , aswell as the "2", "34," refers to verses of the poem. The final "3" indicates it is the 3rd shabd in that raag. There can be more than one shabd on an actual page of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. Even in a translation that has page numbersof its own, the page numbers of the original SGGS are also indicated where the breaks would be in the original version. Sat Nam, Woodstock Singh -

It is customary to wash the hands and cover the head before reading Siri Guru

Granth Sahib ji. That being said, the only other suggestion is that you read

aloud - a whisper is okay - and engage the love of your heart as you read. Read

everything, but skip the verse numbers. If you are reading a short passage, a

nice custom is to read the first and last lines, such as " My stubbornness...

Lord. " twice to enable the meaning to sink into your consciousness.

Enjoy your reading...
