Guest guest
Andrea asks: I would like a curriculum that is both enlightening and unifying (for home schooling). We want our children to know and feel the loving God, and we also want for them: peace, happiness, selflessness, independance and well roundedness. Could anyone suggest a curriculmn or a website/ resource for me in this research?Thank you,Andrea I respond: Dear Andrea, congratulations on taking ownership over your kids, away from the State, whose century-long experiment in compulsory government schooling has horrendously lowered the quality of education. Having left lobbying to become a high school history teacher, I can only thank god that the maniacal teachers union has lost their past battles to smother charter schools. Unfortunately, they have succeeded in denying the poorest parents vouchers in my city of DC, thus condemning these desparate families to their neighborhood prisons they call public schools. I've almost become the lobbyist for the alternative school movement, and Jerry Mintz at the Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO) is the prime hub for all things innovative when it comes to responding not to the needs of bureaucrats and union members, but rather to the needs of parents and kids. The website is www.educationrevolution.org. It's there that you'll find curriculum, standards, pedagogical techniques, books, consultants and everything else needed to give the blessing you're about to give to your very lucky kids. Guest guest
As Andrea, I am taking my children out of school and planning on homeschooling them in the fall. They will be entering grades 3, 5, & 7. I would be most interested in hearing from anyone who may have advise on this as well, as I am now overwhelmed by the amount of curriculum that is out there and feel completely unfamiliar with the content. I am homeschool for the same reasons as Andrea has stated in her posting. It would be wonderful to hear from someone who has experience with curriculums and could help narrow all of the choices down. Guest guest
Hello,I would seriously consider if you are up to the challenge because it is quite the responsibility and as well, it is necessary to enable them to socialize them with others their own age. Education is not about just teaching them but they learn physical skills like sports. Or how to make friends? I don't know if you are a teacher but for many people, home schooling is a nice theory but they can miss out on a lot so it requires some deep thought.PaulaOn 7/15/09, suzanne_winlove <suzanne_winlove wrote: As Andrea, I am taking my children out of school and planning on homeschooling them in the fall. Guest guest
I have considered homeschooling and may do it. In Tallahassee, FL there's a homeschool group that meets Thursdays at a park so the kids can all play together. They also organize " field trips " and other group events sometimes. I imagine many of you could find or start something similar in your area. This would address the concerns about socializing, plus you could get support and suggestions from other parents about curriculum questions. The group here is pretty open. I used to bring my daughter to the park for the playgroup even though she was a baby at the time, so I could get to know the families. Also, even though she wasn't school-aged, we teach her all the time about the world actively and so I consider her homeschooled in that regard even though she is going to go to pre-k this fall in a really cool program at a local museum. As for the teaching aspect, it is true, I have noticed that some parents can teach their children easily, and some children do not take instruction well from their parents but learn well in schools. So some of my friends who wanted to homeschool changed their minds because it was a power struggle with their kids. Now those kids are in great alternative schools in Tallahassee and doing well.
