At the end of the audio cd The Energy of Consciousness Yogi Bhajan explains how

alcohol changes the way the pituitary gland moves and works against us whether

we want to admit it or not. His example was an actress who would get high

naturally on the yoga and then drink champagne and waste it all.

Alcohol and drugs desensitize us, numbing our senses. We work so hard

with yoga and meditation in order to keep moving forward on our

spiritual path, purifying and cleansing karma along the way. Then the

choice is there to poison our blood, our liver and our brain with

alcohol and drugs for whatever emotional reason. Drinking alcohol and

doing drugs is like saying God made us ill-equipped to handle our lives

without it.

In order to stop at the same time while working on your awareness, is an

in between place called duality. An aware person finally gets fed-up

with putting this junk in their body because the high is just not the

same as it used to be. Before becoming aware, there was no consciousness

associated with indulging. Now you REALLY feel like crap when you wake

up after a night of partying....because you know what it feels like to

get up and bliss out with yoga. Sometimes people have to get sick,

before they stop. Perhaps it is easier for them to stop cold turkey

because they have a good thing to fall back on. Our culture continues to

influence the use of these poisons.....and that will not change. Only

you can decide that God's instrument is too perfect and good for putting

this stuff into. Here's a poem that I wrote:

From vodka to vinyard to valium, intoxicants for every shelf,

These choices geared for profit to steer you away from yourself

Pop a pill - Will it heal or will it kill?

Alcohol, drugs, smoking? Poisons for pain or you just can’t fulfill?

What kind of person goes along with this corrupt façade?

Fearful and shallow, living someone else’s song?

Is this your song? or someone else's?

Dear All

About Siri Atma Kaur's comments: Not everyone drinks alcohol to get 'high' - for example, I was brought up in a culture where it was perfectly normal to have a small glass of wine with a meal. Also, I know many Yoga teachers (not Kundalini) who will do just that but they would not dream of getting 'high' or drunk. Wine has been a natural accompaniment to food for centuries.

And what about Christians who are practising Kundalini Yoga? Jesus broke bread and drank wine with his disciples and turned water into wine.

I think there is a big difference between the use of alcohol (as above) or the abuse of alcohol. Perhaps others have some views on this.

Alcohol is not supposed to be used with Kundalini Yoga. Why? because it defeats

the whole purpose of why we even do yoga. To say you 'unwind' or 'relax' with a

glass of wine is fine if you are the regular person who is unconscious and wants

to stay that way. This whole forum is about raising your consciousness, or at

least that is what I thought it was. Raising your consciousness involves

deepening your breath, heightening your awareness, not dimming it with alcohol.

A lot of the bible is written in metaphors, and for the era it was from. It is a

history.

Christians who are practicing Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan needs to

refrain from alcohol just like the rest of us.

One last thing one drink can be extremely toxic to a person. Natives are

especially allergic to alcohol. One drink is too much ....just stay away from it

and do your breathing, and meditating and getting your high from gratitude of

all these wonderful teachings.

Your body does not recognize a difference of why your mind is putting wine into

it!

Whether you take one sip with dinner or to get " high " the physiological

response is the same.

Bottom line is that you damage your nervous system, the very system (one of)

that you are doing Kundalini Yoga to strengthen.

When you commit to reaching the goal of yoga then alcohol, including wine is not

taken into the body any longer, nor animal products, nor cigarette smoking, nor

gambling, or uncontrolled sex life. These are the injunctions of the Veda's and

Kundalini Yoga originates from the Vedic literature. It's just like if you

want to travel by car to NY. You get a map and follow it to your destination,

taking the most direct route, if you veer off here and there it takes longer to

reach your destination. In the same way, there is a clear map to attain the

goal of yoga, if you veer off here and there it will take you longer to reach

your goal. The choice is yours. There isn't a right choice or a wrong choice,

it is yours. No need to defend or argue about whether it is right or wrong, it

is just your choice.

Hello,

I must agree with Hari Atma. I use to love wine but I found it would get in the

way of my Kundalini practice the next day. Even if I had only one glass of wine

with dinner. I would feel as if there was a gray fog over my consciousness.

take care,

Anne Marie
