Does anyone have anything to so say about the effects of practicing yoga along

with weightlifting. Do the two complement each other or can the weightlifting

mess with the yoga. How much time should the two practices be separated by. I am

reffering mainly to the subtle/energetic/psychospiritual aspects rather than

just the muscles. Is there any information on this?

One of my students lifts weights, takes Hatha Yoga, Russian Stretch, and also

Vaganova Ballet with me. (She's not in my KY class.) She is tiny, has the most

defined physique on a woman that I've ever seen, and projects master energy. I

think it's with other systems that you have to be careful. (Martial arts, ballet

syllabus, Bikram Yoga, etc...) I don't lift weights, but as far as I know

weightlifting isn't a system. If you experiment with your schedule and see how

you feel, I'm sure your body will tell you. This particular student lifts

weights in the mornings and practices Yoga and Ballet in the evenings.

In observing her, it's an excellent combination. She has tremendous power,

muscle tone, excellent balance, and superb concentration. She also told me that

she is very structured and likes working 9-5. So she's balanced her evolved

spirituality with a grounded career and finances.

Yes Weight Lifting (properly done!) and Kundalini yoga are very complimentary.

Many of my patients & students do both and have multiplied their progress. I

had the privilege of accompanying Yogi Bhajan once to Gold's Gym at Venice beach

where he " lifted " with Arnold & Fanco Colobo.

Always use breath when you lift, use good form and enjoy both.

Sat Nam,

Kundalini works more on the nervous system than muscles so you get different

effects. Nerves are unique in our body in that they regress when not used, and

can totally grow anew into areas if that area is stimulated. Muscular growth

doesn't improve nervous system strength. Too much muscle build up may impact

nerve strength and growth adversely. Nervous system growth impacts our awareness

positively. Excessive muscle growth may dull it a bit. It's also more difficult

to maintain muscle growth when doing a lot of yoga.
