Guest guest
Sat Naam, Sat Kirin Kaur recorded a lovely version of Nobility on her album Blessings of a Woman -- http://www.satkirin.com/index2.html#1-music. You can also probably get the classic version of Nobility from Ancient Healing Ways. I believe it's Raghu Rai Kaur who recorded it. I think she wrote it as well. Guest guest
Have you tried checking with Ancient Healing Ways? They have a lot of those old tapes (probably would not be on CD though). Guest guest
Sat Nam, As an aside, the author of " A Noble Woman " was a young lady named Wahe Guru Kaur. She was my roommate in what was the Brentwood Ashram back in 1972, the year this song was written. Wahe Guru Kaur was a bit of a quirky rhymer. In the original version of " A Noble Woman " she sang that a woman is noble " even if she lives in a tree. " This line was later replaced with " even if she lives in poverty. " Does anyone know where Wahe Guru Kaur, also known as Janet, is today? I believe she was briefly married to Waheguru Singh of Los Angeles. Guest guest
Sat Nam, Dev Saroop Kaur -- Greetings. As a simple nuance regarding the attribution that Raghu Rai Kaur " wrote " the Nobility song, she was a friend to me in Espanola several years after the song was recorded. And I want to honor her artistry and Seva for that song, but also I think it might be more accurate to say that she " wrote " Nobility in a similar way that John Gray " wrote " Women Are From Venus, Men Are From Mars. They were both essentially re-arrangements taken directly from Khalsa Women's Camp Notes (ie., lectures of Siri Singh Sahib Yogi Bhajan). The phrasing of the lines in the song are so clearly his way of saying, his way of observing and his way of understanding as he taught us. It is clear for me that he deserves " first credit " for the expressions and the vision in the song that were his expressions, in literal use of his lecture material. I'd love to hear the song again today, Guru Nanak's birthday celebration -- " Noble is a virtue of the presence of God. " A beautiful reminder of Who really shines through us when " we " are at our best. It's not us, it's the " essence " of us which is also the essence of God. Thank you for reminding about this classic, beautiful piece, and its sources. Guest guest
Sat Naam All, Great! Wonderful clarifications! First Guru Prem confirmed that it was Wahe Guru Kaur (previously married to Wahe Guru Singh) who put the words to music. And second, Krishna Singh clarified that Wahe Guru Kaur used the words from Yogi Bhajan's lectures for the song. Various people would frequently create songs from his lecture material at women's camp -- either at Yogi Bhajan's instruction or by personal inspiration. We were there for many weeks each summer (I started coming during the 6-week era) and a lot of great inspiration happened there. For sure, we sang 'Nobility' (sometimes called Noble Woman) frequently. Yogi Bhajan loved that song and would have us sing it during lectures and he would use it during yoga classes. For the manual called 'I Am A Woman' that KRI put published this year, I put together a piece about all the songs we used to sing at Women's Camp. You may find it interesting: http://devsuroopkaur.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/songs-along-the-way/. Guest guest
Raghu Rai Kaur did not write the "Noble Woman" song. I think Guru Prem Kaur is correct although I couldn't remember the name of the woman who did write it - I just know it's not Raghu Rai (who however did write & record many beautiful "oldies" that might be available still on tape). Guest guest
Sat Nam Krishna Singh I can definitely see the similarities between the teaching of YB and John Gray. Do you know there is a definite connection and that he read the notes? Thanks GuruBandhu Kundalini-Yoga , " sevaplace01 " <krishna wrote: > > Sat Nam, Dev Saroop Kaur -- > Greetings. Guest guest
Satnam about Nobility was NOT WRITTEN BY RAGU KAUR.Curious why you think so. Actually the song was a culminationof a lady named Wahe Guru Kaur putting the words of Yogi Bhajan'skey lines from his Ladies Camp lecture to music....there were a groupof us working on this together....just for the record this was postedbefore on KY . Guest guest
When I changed a few words in Nobility in the 80's it was to make the song more compatible with the lecture(s) on " Nobility " that the Siri Singh Sahib gave at Women's Camp a particular summer - which Wahe Guru Kaur (who used to be married to Wahe Guru Singh) had written, according to her account. Since we knew each other, I asked her where she had gotten the concepts - and she directed me to the lecture(s). It may be possible the Wahe Guru Kaur put together they lyrics and Raghu Rai Kaur did the melody - but, since Wahe Guru Kaur was also a musician - and didn't mention Raghu Rai Kaur, that is still a question for me.
