Guest guest
Hi all, I am knew to the group and to Kundalini Yoga. I have been practicing KY since June of 2009. I was introduced prior to that by Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa's prenatal and postnatal DVDs in 2005. I did those along with the Hatha DVDs I had and all I knew was there was something wonderful about her teachings and I wanted more. I am on a healing path from several traumatic experiences in my life, including the unnecessary surgical birth of my first born daughter. These experiences have left me an anxious and impatient person, wanting to do everything myself as quickly as possible, so needless to say frustrated. That is changing. I am healthier now than ever in my life (even when I was very athletic). I am 100 pounds lighter than I was 1 year and 6 months ago. Where I was spiritually dry before, I am waking up. I am hearing God speak to me through scripture and meditation. I am a Christian and on a journey in that way. I was already in this healing path when KY found me again. It has enhanced my holistic healing in so many ways. I don't have an in person teacher. There are none anywhere near me as we are very rural in Appalachia. In fact, there are no yoga studios of any sort anywhere near (though there are 2 new Hatha teachers in the area trying to get something started). I am so new, I had no idea who Yogi Bhajan was, what kundalini was, or that Sikhism was a religion, and so many other things until after I was already regularly practicing. I always wonder if I am doing things properly. I wonder about so many things. I am a mother of 2 little ones which I plan to homeschool and I stay very busy. I get in an hour practice 5 days a week while my youngest naps. I am usually never alone when I am practicing. We live in a very small cabin. I cannot rise early to practice because of health issues and the fact that it wakes my baby up. Despite all of this I heard the inner guru speak about a month ago. It said.... " Stop fighting. Why are you fighting. " I then got a Yogi Tea and the tag said... " Your mind is energy. Regulate it. " That evening at church my pastor preached on Psalm 46:10 " Cease striving and know that I am God. " Yes, loud and clear... I got it! I am working on this. My mind constantly races and plans what is to happen next. How can I get the most out of my time? Now, I have just completed 40 times doing the Maya Fiennes DVD Detox and Destress. It wasn't 40 consecutive times, but 40 in as many days as I could get it done. Since last night was new moon, I started a new practice today. The set in the back of Gurmukh's book The 8 Human Talents. I am leading myself which is challenging, but I am hoping it will help me to focus. I have to stop between kriyas to reset my timer for the next, etc... and that is a little frustrating. Not to mention being brought out of savasana by a loud ding. It turned my body to jello... very very challenging to me. I constantly question if I'm doing things right. I have felt the Kundalini energy rise and vibrate through my spine and head and out of the crown despite the fact that I have a hard time stilling my mind. I know this is working, and I feel so much better for it. It is making me a better wife and mother... all around person. I am really interested in a book describing the basics to authentic KY practice and the whys behind the rules. Is there a such book? Sat Nam! Be blessed, Kelli
Guest guest
Hi Kelli...I was with Yogi Bhajan from the beginning and spent many years with him. In this path we say it is " the Guru that takes you across " ...to your Universal life. When that happened to me it was Jesus that appeared and became that doorway. But in that experience it was clear that the " Nam " and the " Christos " are one and the same. All my time with the Yogji and the Sikhs made me a better Christian...and visa versa. So feel absolutely comfortable with that. I live in rural Mississippi and learned to present yoga things in away that didn't allow the more fundamentalist religious to be scared off. I have had many Baptist...hillybilly bikers...and Evangelist in my classes...its just a matter of taking the extra time to learn how to speak about it. I would suggest Joel Goldsmith " Practicing the Presence " ......as to kundalini...I think the best manual for new people was the first one to come out in 1976 " Kundalini Yoga/sadhna Guidlines " ......and in here...you can ask any question about your practice and there will be many people who would love to advise you. There are so many ways of doing all this yoga...so you listen to everyone, take it in...and pretty soon you'll find your own particular style. But the early sahdna manual is very clear on the basics..........Be free to ask any question in this forum.....In Christ peace....Kirantana Oh and one last thing...when you are weak...I have found eating oatmeal in the morning is one of the fastest ways of building the blood. I mean real oat meal.....steal cut...the kind that takes 40 minutes to cook....eat that with some nettles capsules...pick you right up :-) Kundalini-Yoga , " hillfolkmama " <kudzumountain wrote: > > Hi all, > I am knew to the group and to Kundalini Yoga. Guest guest
Sat Nam Kelli -- I'm so glad that you found Kundalini Yoga and that it is helping you on your healing journey. Here are the two best " intro " books that I have encountered: http://www.spiritvoyage.com/yoga/Kundalini-Yoga/Shakta-Kaur-Khalsa/BKS-009004.as\ px http://www.spiritvoyage.com/yoga/Kundalini-Yoga--The-Flow-of-Eternal-Power/Shakt\ i-Parwha-Kaur-Khalsa/BKS-009030.aspx Also, what state are you in? There are a few scattered kundalini teachers around Appalachia -- I googled and found a class in Tennessee and North Carolina. Listserve folks could probably help you locate a teacher nearby if you can provide a few more details on your location. Enjoy the journey & be well! Guest guest
Thank you everyone who responded here and personally. This is the warmest welcome. I can't wait to get Kundalini Yoga: The Eternal Flow. I will as soon as the money allows. I am in eastern Kentucky. There are 3 KY teachers in Kentucky and they are all in northern Kentucky (found through the KY teacher search page.) This is about 5 hours from me. Not practical. I'm so excited about KY and all it has already done in my life. I'm grateful to be a part of this list. I hope it won't bother anyone if I post questions from time to time, or just write about my progress or journey. It helps me so to write things out and share them with other like-minded people.
