Guest guest
Sat Nam, Amarbir Kaur ji - I love your question and especially your open minded way of expressing why it matters to you. This question (especially in the way you've asked it) is one of the most important questions I've every read on this site. Truly. I would like to point out, respectfully, that one of the challenges of your question is that an entire reformulation of our understanding of gender, relationship and spirituality is required in order to " see " what Guru Nanak taught. It is not an alpha male dominant perspective. Similarly, but in the opposite way, the teaching that " Shakti (woman) is 16 times more powerful than a male " is not an anti-male teaching. Both " molecular cell biology " and Guru Nanak agree that the feminine principle is dominant in the " living life " of the Universe. Evolutionary biology confirms that the separation and creation of the male principle happened as haploid cells of reproduction were divided out of the female principle, to create a means for multi-celled animal reproduction. Biologist Lynn Margulis is a wonderful and authoritative source for these profound insights (another factoid: she also married Carl Sagan as an 18 year old graduate of the University of Chicago). She and James Lovelock also developed the Gaia Theory of Earth as a massive " organism-like " entity. This all very " female-centric. " All Ten " Guru Nanaks " (from Nanak himself to Guru Gobind Singh) are in basic agreement with the basic and essential insights that Margulis is also saying: " In Life (both biological and spiritual), the Female came first and the Female comes first. " THIS IS EXACTLY WHY THE ARDAS (primary prayer of the Dharma of Nanak) BEGINS: " PRITHAM BHAGOTI SIMAR KE, GURU NANAK LAIHN DHI-AY " Which means " After FIRST worshiping the Adi Shakti (the Primal Sword and the Primal Female Power), THEN meditate on Guru Nanak, et al, etc. " Now, from a conventional paradigm, it would seem that all this " new " structure and evaluation of what is " reality " COULD BE inherently female " DOMINANT " and anti-masculine. But this isn't the truth either. Guru Nanak offered an entire metaphysical reformulation of Universe and Reality in the Muhl Mantra, and this formulation was simplified even further by Guru Amar Das into EIGHT SYLLABLES: " Ek Ong Kar Sat Nam Siri Wahe Guru. " In the Muhl Mantra Guru Nanak tells us quite clearly that the " One Infinity " is the ONLY thing of reality that is " AJUNI. " Juni means " yoni " - the female sexual organ. All other " THINGS " WITHIN the Universe are NOT " A-nuni " (ie., EVERYTHING else that " is, " is born from the feminine principle. Seems like a very feminine-centric Universe (and it is so, in Guru Nanak's view). The infinite reality of " INFINITY " (which Gurusikhs know otherwise as " Wahe Guru " ) is the masculine POLARITY to the entire rest of " Everything. " We are part of that " everything. " THIS masculine polarity happens also to be a " Perfect Male " just as PRITHAM BHAGOTI (Adi Shakti Primal Sword) is a " Perfect Female. " And so THEY are also the model for Marriage in Guru Nanak's teaching. BUT not in the way that " Adam and Eve " were the model marriage in Torah, Bible or Koran. For Guru Nanak, Infinity did NOT create marriage as primarily a relationship between two human beings at all. For Guru Nanak, MARRIAGE is primarily a relationship between SOUL BRIDE and WAHE GURU, wherein the Soul Bride is in devotion to Wahe Guru (not a human male, and EVERY HUMAN (female or male) is meant to be a Soul BRIDE. Now, to an ordinary male perspective, this would seem like the ultimate put down of masculinity - whereas you (Amarbir Kaur) were reading this whole system as ANTI-FEMININE. Isn't this ironic (to say the least)? In reality, Guru Nanak's primordial insight is neither anti-feminine, nor anti-masculine. But to appreciate (and to " live " ) this truly - that will require a TOTALLY NEW SYNTHESIS OF " WHAT IS A HUMAN BEING? " In addition to the inception of the primacy of the unitary conception of " Ek Ong Kar " this redefinition of Humanity is both revolutionary and evolutionary in history of human culture and " thoughts. " The Universe is infinitely curved and variable, and AT THE SAME, utterly simple, " Infinity is INSEPARABLE from Every FINITE experience. " This means that the Infinite Masculinity is One and Inseparable from EVERY ONE OF US - who are the SOUL BRIDES (feminine polarities) of Wahe Guru. I assure you, Wahe Guru is NOT a " macho alpha male, wife beating, dominating, authoritarian, misogynistic woman hater. " Most of all, Wahe Guru wants " HIS " wife to be the enlightened model of grace, beauty, power, intelligence, freely knowing and blessing everything. Which is exactly the destiny of every human being - to Experience the pre-existing enlightenment (Wahe Guru) already within us ALL. It's an amazing PROPOSAL - if you are able to say " Yes. I Do. " to Wahe Guru, then one belongs to Wahe Guru, and the Seal of Wahe Guru ji ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru ji ki Fateh " is one's living experience, and all success (which belongs to Wahe Guru) is most certainly " shared in " by Wahe Guru's retinue of Soul Brides, and everyone lives happily ever after in gender respect and equity, while we wait for the recalcitrant macho alpha male egos to get a grip and to get a clue. This is the Master Game we're all witnessing and living today, as the Piscean illusions of male dominant reality are being cleanses (in many ways, some of which seem very painful for all concerned). Just remember the Wahe Guru aspect of ourselves feels no pain, and rushes in compassion for the relief of the pains of others in the most enlightened manner possible for each situation. Thank you, thank you, for asking this question. A definitive book and research organization is actually needed for the evolution of " How do we LIVE this miracle? " SSS Yogiji started the ball rolling in our part of the world, but the work is now, still, entirely unfinished and depends completely on US (all of us). Yet, that depends entirely on Wahe Guru, in Wahe Guru's own sweet time. Love and Blessings, may your paths toward the experience of " True Love " be truly blessed, Krishna Singh ************************** Sat nam yogis, Is all the mantra scripture designed in accordance with misogynist spiritual lens of the universe? Is the mantra literature written with a male-centric view of the Universe - I.E. that infinity is male, or is it the careful translation to English? I'm still curious about the attachment the translations have to gender - is it from the source material or the lack of gender neutral words in English? " The time of rejoicing has come; I sing of my Lord God. I have heard of my Imperishable Husband Lord, and happiness fills my mind. My mind is in love with Him; when shall I realize my great good fortune, and meet with my Perfect Husband? I pose this question as a selfish attempt to authentically connect with the language of the mantras, and to intellectually develop my own language to support my practice - outside of the misogynist spiritual view of life and the universe. If in fact the translations hold true, and this is the language which supports my spirit and cleanses my subconscious, then all I can do is express is my gratitude for the ancestors who practiced this holy exercise in the spirit of bliss and elevation, and trust that my journey is supported even in the lens of misogyny, and trust that the spirit of the practice is not lost in translation. Thank you for your patience in reviewing this post, With much love and respect, April/Amarbir Kaur
