Guest guest
Sat Nam Dear Sangat, Does anyone have any recommendations, comments, or resources on teaching KY to athletes, especially football players? These guys are typically 140-260 pounds, aged between 20-34, and full of testosterone and ego-mania! This is full contact football too. They will be doing weight-lifting and the usual calisthenics. I was thinking frog poses, ab-strenghtening, lung capacity, circulation, flexibility. My time with them may or may not be limited, so I'd like to hear suggestions perhaps in order of importance based on their need. So my question is what can KY do to best support their situation (already doing weights and calisthenics) and goal of playing football? Anybody have experience with this? Any kriya or meditation suggestions? Thanks for all you do. Many blessings to you! -Tegbir Singh
Guest guest
Sat Nam! In my experience with this kind of " built " people I've found very useful those kriyas working on flexibility of the spine and with stretching series (usually they are athletic and strong, but they are not as flexible and able to manage muscular tension in the body). I suggest you the book of Nirvair Singh " The Art, Science and Application of Kundalini Yoga " where you can find many series about this topic. Then you can work on a subtle level, with meditations and mantras.....but first you must find a way to make them sit in a confortable way ;-) .....just my 2c! Blessings, Sujan S. Guest guest
My experience is teaching student athletes who are part of a larger student body, they attend class both for themselves and for their sport. I know this as some of them mention their sports in their term paper. As far as football players, they seem to have transitioned out over the years...and it may have been that some of the other yoga teachers could not " relate to them " or the football players really wanted other options " sports stretching. " Why not hatha yoga, why not pilates, why not ...? Do they know Kundalini Yoga is more then " action muscles " and that a healthy mind and the entire body will assist them to be better athletics. What about the breath...this is what the runners' mention, that they " improve " with breath control. Other performance students (musicians) mention their calmness in competitive situations. My suggestion is if they have other options on the action muscle body for strength and stretch (other styles of yoga) then offer KY as a specialty once per week or once per month workshop. Connect with them that improvement to overall mind and body is also a benefit. If you desire for KY to be the stretch/strength yoga of choice as well as what it is then you may need a coach that is forward looking or you may want to learn both a hatha style and get in the door...add KY later after you have a connection. Is concentration needed in football? What about quick reaction time? What about intuition?
