Guest guest
Sat Nam I teach yoga to those with chronic illness, but from hatha traditions, although I am now almost done with my Kundalini training so soon will incorporate more of that. I taught a weekly class for a while in marin at elephant pharmacy, free to public/community. Most main hospitals now too have yoga for cancer , HIV and other chronic illnesses. If you are in san francisco UCSF, CPMC and Marin General I believe all have it as well as others. So much can be taught from yoga in chairs, in beds, wheelchairs etc. You can give the options of course to rest/not do the whole class if they need or do what they can. Often for many with chronic illness, it is a feat just to get to a class or support group. Spinal energy series from Kundalini yoga I have learned can be taught if those are too tired to do standing/sitting cross legged, they can do that from chairs. Also simple and gentle pranayama (alternate nostril breath/calming breath) and breath awareness mediation they call it in Kundalini yoga can be done even while in a bed if too sick/low energy to do physical postures/kriyas. Mantras RA MA DA SA and more for healing can be done from chairs or if in bed or wheelchairs, etc. Other meditations for healing as taught by Yogi Bhajan can be offered. SO much can be taught/done, in a group or on their own. Studies have shown by Dr Dean Ornish bringing INtegral yoga to heart disease patients, that support groups in itself, aside from the yoga exercises and yogic diet promote healing from chronic illness. Hope that helps. Feel free to email to get more ideas. I trained " Gentle Yoga teacher training " from Integral yoga in san Francisco, if you are interested, they do trainings (also in virginia ashram) specifically to teach those with chronic illness. I was led to this work, as many when I was dealing/healing from a chronic illness (lyme disease) and learned how to work with myself and others to do yoga in all conditions/phases of life. I think all communities will benefit from having more of this type of yoga accessible to all, vs. a group class they are too sick or tired to take or attend or get to. I am glad you are inquiring b/c others will benefit from having yoga as a tool to heal/manage illness. Jaipreet Kaur
