Guest guest
Dear Penny, Sat Nam - I suggest that before anyone accepts without critical reflection this causal analysis provided by your osteopath and acupuncturist, that a " REVERSE dynamic " is equally plausible, or even more so. I wrote extensively on this website, about migraine dynamics and a detoxification remedy (coffee enema) a month or so ago. My personal experience of severe migraine goes back 35 years, the underlying causal factor being Liver dysfunction, that leads excess toxicity in the blood, and all these symptoms effects can be dealt with directly by working with Liver detoxification. Moreover, the chain of causality makes more sense. Yes, spinal adjustments and acupuncture are wonderful treatments for a migraine in progress. They do a lot to relieve the pain and the nausea. BUT, if one traces the gall bladder meridian from the Liver/Gall Bladder to the head, this " trail " passes through all the areas of stress, pain and muscular dis-ease. Especially through the neck and the carotid area (and artery) in the neck. Realize that ALL the blood flow to the brain passes through this area. These tensions due to toxicity cause intense muscular tension in the neck, and THEREBY cause the neck vertebrae to go out of alignment, adding to the pain and nausea already underway due to the underlying blood chemistry disorder (from Liver toxicity). In pinpointing Liver as an originating cause of migraine, we're already in the abdominal DIGESTIVE area, the Liver being a very primary organ in the digestive system. When the Liver becomes toxic, nausea is a direct abdominal response. One does NOT have to " go to the neck " in order to invoke Vagus Nerve irritation. It might well be that the Vagus nerve (passing through the abdominal area, as you point out) intensifies and transmits the abdominal disorder to the neck, rather than the other way around). Obviously, once this cycle is triggered it is a cycle that can reinforce itself in both directions. I'm not a physician, or a physiologist. BUT I do happen to inhabit one specific instance of human physiology (ie., my own " yogi body " ) and I've experienced these cycles " ad nauseum " (literally) for many years, and have tracked the phenomena and self-treated them successfully for more than a decade. In earlier times I did resort to chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture because they helped the symptoms a lot. But since 1998, I've not seen an acupuncturist one time for this problem, and stopped resorting to chiropractic as a cure - because I found them to be unnecessary to solve the problem. If a misalignment of neck vertebrae were the cause, chiropractic/osteopathic adjustment would be at the top of my list. But instead, detoxifying Liver is always at the top of the list, and always where I resort to deal with a migraine which now happens rarely (unless I burn the candle at both ends for too long - which leads to a Liver overload, nausea, pain in neck and shoulders, and eventually, pain around the brain). My simple suggestion is that the factors you mentioned are relevant and helpful for treatment of a migraine in progress, but do little to prevent them from occurring (in my experience), because the " causal cycle " runs in the opposite direction (in my experience). The Liver toxicity causes nausea in the abdomen, transmits muscular tension (especially to neck area) which causes cervical vertebrae misalignment, which aggravates the underlying problem of a migraine already underway (with causes in the bloodstream). Purify the blood and there will be no migraine. The osteopath's analysis you cited does not explain why or how the neck gets out of alignment in some (supposedly leading to a migraine, and others never get migraines). Finally (and ironically for this discussion), the coffee enema home remedy approach is actually a classic remedy of Osteopathic sources. It once was listed in the Merck medical manual as an effective treatment for migraine. However, no big pharma companies make even a dime from coffee sales, so why allow nature to compete with corporate profits? Go figure. This is how " healthcare " works in the corporate state. The headache is caused by pressure on the occipital nerve, whilst nausea is from pressure on the vagus nerve which runs down into the stomach. This explains why some migraine sufferers get relief by vomiting - the neck contraction shifts the vertebrae enough to provide relief. >
