Guest guest
PONDICHERRY PSYCHOLOGY ASSOCIATION (Regd) in collaboration with INDIAN ACADEMY OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY INTERNational SEMINAR on INTEGRAL YOGA PSYCHOLOGY 26 – 27 JUNE 2004 Venue: Hotel Anandha Inn, Pondicherry, India Introduction One of India's most ancient teachings is - " Let noble thoughts come to us from every side. " At the beginning of this new millennium, we find that in the majority of institutions of Higher Education across the globe, almost all the intellectual categories and frameworks being used by scholars, practitioners, and students are West-centric or Western. This is also true for most of the educational institutions in India. Knowledge systems that have origins in non-Western thought and traditions are not considered mainstream. This growing universalization of Western knowledge systems is being challenged by several intellectual efforts across the world by pointing out that an increasingly globalized world calls for the development of integrative curricula that experiment with ways of knowing, being, feeling, doing and relating that give justice to a multitude of social, cultural and philosophical traditions reflecting the many aspects of human potential. Several integrative worldviews are presented in the Indian traditions. One such worldview is found in the work of Sri Aurobindo. His teachings and sadhana not only gave a new life to the ancient Indian wisdom but also show a path for humanity to work towards becoming a divine human race through adopting an Integral approach to life and learning. His teachings based on his belief in Human Unity are being practiced at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and in Auroville. Located five miles north of Pondicherry, Auroville has been adopted by UNESCO as the first international city on Earth. Here, " the emphasis is on each man [or woman] discovering his [or her] own inner center behind their social, moral, cultural and racial heredity and appearances and actively living from that center, expressing it in outer work for the community. " Many educational institutions and organizations throughout India are applying Sri Aurobindo's worldview in areas of education and human and social development. This seminar on " Integral Psychology” is one such initiative taken by the Indian Academy of Applied Psychology and Pondicherry Psychology Association. This seminar brings together scholars and practitioners from across the globe with a common aim to discuss the variety of issues related to the relevance and application of Eastern and Western Psychological and Spiritual approaches to education in meeting the global challenges. Objectives · Discussion of various models of psychology with special reference to education · Discussion of various indigenous schools of thought in Integral psychology · Exploring important areas and issues that can bring Eastern Integral Studies to the forefront in order for it to become a living force for the future. · Developing practical applications of Indian approaches for Western students. To achieve the objectives described above, there will be a plenary session and technical sessions. Each of these sessions will be devoted to one of the main objectives. The plenary session will have invited speakers only. Future Perspectives The concluding session will be devoted to a reporting session in which the important ideas that transpired during the seminar will be highlighted. It should bring the depth and relevance of Integral psychology into focus and find ways to make it an essential part of education and research.
