THE HAZARDS OF THE OCCULT

By

Yogamaharishi

Dr Swami Gitananda Giri Guru Maharaj

The Siddhis - the occult powers - are a great temptation for the immature seeker. But hey can steal away lifetime of evolution and leave the imprisoned self-embodied for more lifetimes to come.

The occult sciences of the West place much emphasis upon the production pf psychic powers and achieving psychic attainments. There is a parallel in the Indian spiritual system, but without the preoccupation of gaining attainments or their powers. Indeed, the Yoga Rishis of India have taught that the Siddhis or psychic accomplishments are incidentally acquired through the mastery of certain higher phases of Yoga known as Samyama. The Siddhis are a by-product of the spiritual evolution of the Yogi, and unless these powers are carefully mastered and brought under control of the spiritual aspirant, the may destroy the spiritual Sadhana and impede evolution. Maharishi Patanjali, the codifier of the Yoga Sutra, does not in any way glorify the Siddhis or the Yogi who has these attainments. He simply states that a Yogi who has mastered the Samyama

acquires Siddhis. These Siddhis include many types of psychic accomplishments. Ancient texts reveals the recording of some 180 Siddhis - as illustration, we will describe some classical ones:

Hetuvidya: telepathy and thought reading.

Adrishyatwa: the ability to make the physical body invisible.

Dwa-Vinyasatwa: de-materialisation of the physical body at will so as to disappear from one place and to appear at another.

Parva Darshana: retro-cognition or knowledge of the immediate and distant past.

Uttarakalatwa: pre-cognition or knowledge of the future.

Prativishtwa: the ability to overcome the effects of poisons or toxins of any type.

Jantujna: the ability to communicate with animals and other sentient and insentient things by thought transference or by animal language.

Much confusion exists as to the nature of the Yoga Siddhis. Uninformed writers and those not initiated into the "mysteries" of Yoga and Tantra assume the Siddhis to be some kind of magic and the Siddha, the accomplished one, to be a magician. Nothing could be farther from truth - but the truth may be difficult to define. What appears to be miraculous and magic at one level, becomes scientifically and intellectually explainable at another level, and possible and attainable at still a higher level.

"As Above, So Below" is an axiom which supports the theory that all of the powers of the Universal are available at the independent, personal level for he who has attained the Universal, impersonal state of mind. The Universal, impersonal state of mind is the key to the proper use of the Siddhis by the Yogi as opposed to the very personal, self-gratifying, ego-stimulating, power ploys of most occult sciences. No Yogi of any repute aims at the attainment of extraordinary, supra-normal, supra-personal powers. The use of Siddhis, their attainments, powers and possessions are looked down upon as impediments to the evolutionary path of Yoga. The weak Sadhaka is warned to shun the attainments and to keep the mind one-pointedly on the goal of Self Realisation. Those more steady in their Sadhana may use some of their Siddhis for the benefit of worthy

seekers, the ill, or mankind as a whole. The Siddhis are to be used - never misused!
