Alu-Loma Viloma Prakriya.

To what does the word “Alu” refer.

Alu is a derivative of “Alaya”, an abode or a vessel. In this context, it refers to the Pranamaya Kosha, the vital or psychic body, which is the abode of the opposing forces of Prana and Apana, and the vessel within which they may be polarised or balanced.

What is the purpose of Alu-Loma Viloma Prakriya?

The Alu-Loma-Viloma Prakriya is another of the Polarity Kriyas, and its purpose is to centre the practitioner into the channels (of the spinal region) through which the opposing energies of the Prana and Apana flow. This enables these flows to be balanced, thereby resulting in the success of any concurrent yogic practices, such as Pranayama, and inducing a state of deep relaxation. Indeed, the word Alu also derives from “Aalu”, which refers to a floating boat, and alludes to how a student feels after practicing this Prakriya. The Alu-Loma Viloma Prakriya is also considered to “rend” or “tear” apart any old Karmic holds, assisting the practitioner in transcending his or her animal nature.

Name the five Prana Vayus.

The five major Prana Vayus, also known as the Pancha Prana Vayus, are:

a. Udana - situated in the throat area, and influencing sensory perception and the nervous system;

b. Prana – centred in the heart area, and relating to respiration and speech;

c. Samana – situated between the heart and the naval, and controlling metabolism;

d. Apana – situated below the navel, and regulating the automatic actions of the digestive organs;

e. Vyana – centred near the sex organs, and controlling voluntary and involuntary muscle contraction and relaxation, and the circulation.

Describe briefly Para Prana Vayus.

The Para Prana Vayus is the Psycho-Mental Prana. This prana manifests as mind-brain activity, such as thinking and remembering.

Detail the three parts of Alu-Loma Viloma Prakriya.

The Alu-Loma Viloma Prakriya is a three-part prakriya. These three parts may be performed consecutively, or separately as three smaller kriyas. The three parts are as follows:

Part 1: The practitioner begins by lying with the head to the north and practicing Anu-Loma Viloma, the Polarity Breath. After a few rounds of this breath, the practitioner imagines that he or she is surrounded by a large oval of energy, extending 15cm above and below the body. This energy is envisaged as divided into two halves, one on the right, and the other on the left side of the body. The practitioner then imagines the Apana flowing down the left side of the body on the exhale, and the Prana rising up through the right side of the body on the inhale. This “ovaling of energy” is then continued for a minimum of nine complete rounds of breath, resulting in a feeling of “psychic

protection”.

Part 2: The oval is restricted to the smaller area between the top of the head and the toes. The energy is then “ovaled” for the same no. of breaths as was practiced in Part 1. This practice induces feelings of self-reliance and relaxation.

Part 3: The oval is further restricted to the area between the brain and the base of the spine, before the ovalling process is continued as above. It may then be restricted again, to the region of the Ida and Pingala Nadis of the spine. The “ovalling” is then continued until deep relaxation results.
