Guest guest
A Multi-Faceted Gem: Desh. M Wins National Award In an age when academic achievement has become the end-all and be-all of children’s lives, it is refreshing to encounter youngsters who shine like multi-faceted gems in artistic, athletic, spiritual and cultural realms as well as educational endeavours. Such a youngster is Desh. M of Pondicherry who recently was awarded the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievements, announced by the Human Resource Development Ministry from New Delhi. The recipients are in the age group 4-15 years and have shown exceptional achievements in the fields of academics, art, culture and sports. Desh. M, studying in class IX at the Kendriya Vidyalaya School II in Pondicherry, has been a student for nearly nine years of Yoganjali Natyalayam, under her Guru Yogacharini Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, where she shines in Yoga Asana and Bharat Natyam skills. She is presently undertaking the Nine Year Yoga and Bharat Natyam Part Time Diploma Course at Yoganjali Natyalayam. She is the daughter of D. Ilavarasi an English language teacher at the Government Tiruvalluvar Girls Higher Secondary School. Tmt Ilavarasi has carefully groomed and guided Desh, preserving every single certificate of her daughters’ in files and folders. Even her very first drawing competition in LKG A has been kept carefully. Desh’s curriculum vitae, which weighs several kilos, is filled with certificates, news clippings, photographs and testimonials. Her bio-data shows the immense scope of her talent, which overflows into diverse fields. To date, she has 35 cups, 7 medals, 30-odd shields and countless numbers of certificates that she has won in competitions in Yoga, Singing, Dancing, Painting, Creative Writing, and Sports. Just 13 years old, she excels also in academics, disproving the commonly held notion that extra-curricula activities distract youngsters from serious academic work. She has bagged the Swami Gitananda Best Child Award 2002 as well as Sangeetha Samrat Best Young Vocalist Award 2003. She has participated in many programmes and dance dramas such as Nala Damayanthi, Silappadikaram and played the major role of Hanuman in Ramavathara. She has performed in more than 150 Bharat Natyam programme, displaying the acrobatic Natya Karanas. She has won many prizes in Yoga, Music and Dance competitions including 3rd prize in 11th International Yoga Festival 2003, 1st prize in 17th Pondicherry State Yogasana Championship and 1st prize in Yoga Art, Yoga Elocution, Yoga Quiz and Yoga Thematic in Swami Gitananda Best Child Award 2002. She was part of the Pondicherry Team that won second prize in National Himalaya, Yoga meet held at Bangalore in 2001 and has also completed her Vocal Music Arangetram. She credits much of her success to her Gurus Yogacharini Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani and Smt Devasena Bhavanani. An excellent poetess, Desh wrote a poem expressing her feelings which was published in the Tenth Anniversary Souvenir of Yoganjali Natyalayam. The poem reveals her elevated thinking even at such a young age. Using the letters of “Yoganjali Natyalayam” she expresses her mature philosophy. You and I ever enjoy as butterflies Obedience to Guru, Parents and elders Gitananda Swami founded our institution Amma is the amazing Guru Nirguna-Para Brahma is the goal Jiva-Atma will try to unite to the Paramatma. Anand Sir is the dynamic embodiment of versatility. Love all is the motto of our Home. Illusion and ignorance are removed. Nourisher of our spiritual development Adhimatratma of its kind in the world Truthfulness is the base age old Yoga is skill in action Abyasa and Vairagya are drilled Lion of Pondicherry ever guides us Awareness of Body, Emotions, Mind are developed Yoga: Step-by-Step is inculcated in us Ashtanga Yoga in the Rishi Culture style. This is the Mantra for all kids in Pondicherry. Desh gives credit to her entire extended family of grandfather, grandmother, aunts and uncles, for backing her in all endeavours and cites her grandfather’s own personal Asana practice at home as the stimulus to her own interest in Yoga Asanas from the age of four. She praises her mother’s dedication and support in taking her to each and every competition, no matter how tight the schedule, which enabled her to develop her talents. Desh. M is the fourth student of Yoganjali Natyalayam to win the National Child Award For Exceptional Achievement for Yoga and Dance and other talents. M. Niraimathy won the award in 2000; N. Ramya in 2001; M. Ilaval in 2002 and Desh. M in 2003. “At Yoganjali Natyalayam, we strive to restore to our children their own cultural heritage, which is their birthright”. Says Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani Director, Yoganjali Natyalayam. Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani was quoted recently in the international magazine Yoga Life as saying: “Much is made in our country of the evils of Child Labour – Children as young as seven or eight years working on construction sites, hotels, factories. But a more insidious form of “Child Labour” is literally “eating our children alive.” Our Educational System has created “bonded labourers” out of our children, who slog from 6 a.m. to midnight everyday of the week (including Sunday) just so, they can score the needed “marks” on their ever present examination sheets. Stress – related diseases, physical, mental and emotional imbalances are now rampant as a result. At Yoganjali Natyalayam, we strive to put joy, life, creativity, freedom and beauty back into our children’s dreary, routine life. We also “work”, but we work with joy and love towards a sublime goal – spiritual development – using the exhilarating medium of our Yogic spiritual and cultural arts and that makes all the difference”. The National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement was instituted in 1996 by the Human Resource Ministry Development of the Central Government, New Delhi, to give recognition to children with extraordinary abilities in the field of arts, culture, sports and academics. This year one gold medal was awarded to Master Sachin Dattatreya Vekoli of Maharashtra for his achievement in the field of computer. Thirty-five children from all over India were awarded Silver Medals, of which Desh. M of Pondicherry was one. Guest guest
Dear Ananda, I'm sorry presssure of work made me completely to forget congratulating Desh for her extraordinary achievements in studies, arts, yoga and sports. Please convey my sincere and heartiest congratulations to her. She is a role model for youth. She has brought great pride not only to herself and members of her family but also to members of the Rishiculture family. Desh has been fortunate in having a devoted father, a dedicated mother and a motivating grand-father. Above all she had Swamiji to inspire her, Amma, you and Devasena to help her develop her latent talents and shine as an accomplshed teenager. In 1988/9 when I spent five months at the ashram, I became aware of the great work being done by Swamiji and Amma to revive Indian culture, make it part of the Ashram life and spread it in and around Pondicherry. Those stilll remain the happiest days in my life when I had my fill of music, dance, religious ceremonies, the deeper version of yoga and a colourful yoga conference to top it all. It is not therefore surprising that you all have now taken it to a higher level of action and achievement. She is your handiwork. Be proud of her achievements, as we are of yours! love Sri Bala. - Dr.Ananda Bhavanani ; iyfyoga ; bgv91 Wednesday, August 04, 2004 1:05 PM Desh : A multifacted gem A Multi-Faceted Gem: Desh.
