YOGNAT INTRODUCES YOGA FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN OF SADAY

Yognat’s programme “Yoga for Special Children of SADAY” was formally inaugurated at the SADAY premises in Kamaraj Nagar, Pondicherry on the 14th August 2004.

Upon the request of Dr. Sugatham, Director of SADAY- a school for Special Children Yognat has drawn up a programme of “Gitananda Yoga” practices to help these children improve their physical and mental abilities. Under the able direction of Dr Sugatham, SADAY has won numerous awards for dedicated service to the cause of the “Special Child” and both he and Yogacharini Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, director Yognat agreed that Yoga should be introduced for the special children.

Yoga has been shown to have positive benefits in children who are slow in physical and mental development and as Yoga can help develop focus on the task at hand as well as integrate body, emotions, and mind it is felt that there can be a lot of benefits for the children by a regular practice of Yoga.

Yogacharini Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, Director ICYER and Yognat inaugurated the “Yoga for Special Children of SADAY” programme in the presence of the eminent social activist Smt Sayi Kumari and Dr. Nalini Devi of the Gitananda Yogalayam, Spain. Many associates of SADAY as well as parents of the children attended the inauguration.

SADAY has 32 special children on rolls and of these 17 children have been selected to attend the classes. The children of SADAY thoroughly enjoyed the hour long session that was conducted by Yogacharya Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani and Shri G Dayanidy that included many Jattis and other loosening exercises, Kriyas modeled on animals, various Asanas as well as Yoga games that have been devised by AMMA in her 36 years of experience in teaching Yoga to children. A special appreciation of all was for the Simha Kriya (the lion sound movement) and the Chatus Pada Kriya (the four footed animal movement) that evoked peals of joyful laughter.

Amma, Dr. Ananda and Dr. Nalini agreed that it was a very satisfying experience to introduce Yoga to the special children and that it was truly heartening to see the joyful response of the children to the practices of Gitananda Yoga. “God has given us the gift of good physical and mental health and we must not forget this wonderful opportunity to serve humanity,” said Amma.

Shri G. Dayanidy and Shri S. Tamil Sengolan who are long time students of Yognat will be conducting the Yoga training for the special children every Saturday from 10 to 11 am at the SADAY premises under the direct supervision of Yogacharya Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani.
