Divine Self

In our Rishiculture Ashtanga or Gitananda Yoga tradition, we emphasize the use of the original Sanskrit or Indian Cultural terms for all yoga practices and so my report on the Dance Drama had such terms

Amma refers to mother and in this case to Yogacharini Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, the present Acharini of Ananda Ashram, Pondicherry

Ananda means unparalleled bliss and in this case to myself, Dr Ananda

Devasena is the consort of Lord Subramaniya or Muruga the second son of Lord Shiva and Parvati

Bhavanani is our family name and refers to home

Tandava refers to the cosmic dance of creation that is by Lord Shiva, the changer or destructor-the positive energy of the universe or male principle-also termed as Shakta

Shakti is the opposite energy to Shiva and represents the female principle also known by the term Devi

Swara is the Indian classical musical note

Adyar is a place in Chennai, South India

Shri is a honorific term like Mr.

Chitra refers to the month of Chittirai in the Indian calendar

Bhutas are the elements of nature such as earth, air, fire, water and ether

Natya Karanas are special dance poses that relate to yogasanas

Reddy and Abbasi are family names

Ramya means that which is tasteful

Divya is the divine nature

Pancha means five as in the pancha kosha, Pancha yama etc

Maha means great

Mantra is a sacred sound or group of sounds also termed a chant that has both outer and inner significance

Gitananda refers to Yogamaharishi Dr Swami Gitananda Giri of the Ananda Ashram Pondicherry

Yogalayam means a temple or abode of yoga

I must mention that it is important to keep India in Yoga and so the Indian terms should be mentioned at all times as much as possible

Yoga without Indian culture is a body without soul

yours in yoga
