CHENNAI, INDIA, November 29, 2004: Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra

Saraswathi has described as an " absolute lie " the police claim that he

had confessed to his involvement in the Sankararaman murder, Tamil Nadu

BJP Unit President C. P. Radhakrishnan, who met the seer earlier in the

day, claimed on Monday night. " I have not committed any mistake. Why

should I make a confessional statement, " the seer, arrested as the

prime accused in the case, had told him (Radhakrishnan) and senior

party colleague Sushma Swaraj when they called on the former at the

Vellore Prison, Radhakrishnan told PTI. Radhakrishnan said the health

of the seer was alright, but he (the seer) was worried about attempts

aimed at character assassination. He was also bothered about the

attempts to tarnish the reputation of the mutt, Radhakrishnan said.

While opposing the bail application of the seer in the Madras High

Court, senior counsel K. T. S. Tulsi, appearing for the Tamil Nadu

Government, had claimed that the seer had confessed to his role in the

murder of Sankarraman, manager of Varadraja Perumal temple in

Kancheepuram. The court today commenced hearing on the second bail

application filed by the Sankaracharya, remanded to judicial custody

till December 10 in the case and lodged in the Vellore prison.

Investigation

NEW DELHI, INDIA, November 26, 2004: India's prime minister has urged

authorities to ensure a top Hindu cleric suspected in a murder case is

treated well in custody and says " extreme care and consideration " must

be taken in investigating the charge. Police arrested Shankaracharya

Jayendra Saraswathi, the most respected Hindu cleric in southern India,

on Nov. 11 for his suspected involvement in the slaying of

Sankararaman, who worked at Jayendra's monastery in Tamil Nadu state

and had allegedly complained to the cleric about misuse of monastery

funds. Jayendra's lawyers have denied the charges. " An investigation

involving a person of his eminence needs to be conducted with extreme

care and consideration, " Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was quoted as

saying in a letter to Tamil Nadu state's Chief Minister. J.

Jayalalithaa. The state government should " take all such measures as

appropriate to ensure (Jayendra's) physical well being, " Singh said in

the letter released by the Press Information Bureau Thursday. " His

Holiness...enjoys a high religious status and position in society. The

sentiments of many individuals are closely associated with His

Holiness' well-being, " Singh said in his letter. (HPI adds: It is

highly unusual for the Prime Minister to issue such a comment on a

criminal case.)

3. HAF Expresses Distress over the Arrest of the Sankaracharya of Kanchi

http://www.hinduamericanfoundation.org

USA, November 24, 2004: The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) issued this

statement:

HAF expresses great distress over the arrest of one of the most widely

admired and respected Hindu spiritual leaders, the Sankaracharya of

Kanchi, Pujya Shri Jayendra Saraswati. The Sankaracharya has been an

inspiration and guide to Hindus throughout the world. Further, he has

led important reforms in India and within Hinduism, particularly in

uplifting socially and economically depressed communities and in

expanding the role of the Sankara Mutt to encompass education and

healthcare across India. The callous disregard for the Sankaracharya's

personal health, his spiritual duties and his standing among Indians

and Hindus worldwide is shocking and reprehensible. Various reports

that his ill-treatment by local officials was politically motivated are

disturbing.

HAF is distressed by demands from some political leaders that the state

government of Tamil Nadu assume management of the Kanchi Mutt, similar

to its management of most major Hindu temples in the state. This

inequitable treatment of Hindu institutions, a policy that has never

been applied to institutions of other religions in India, is

fundamentally flawed and in need of reform. The Kanchi Mutt must be

allowed to maintain its autonomy during this crisis and beyond.

HAF calls on the government of the state of Tamil Nadu to ensure a fair

and independent judicial process that treats the Sankaracharya with the

dignity he deserves for his years of selfless service to all of the

people of India. HAF will continue to closely monitor these events and

stands united with organizations representing numerous spiritual and

religious traditions worldwide that have voiced their collective agony

over these events.

4. Australian Study Finds Direct Correlation Between White Bread

Consumption and Diabetes

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/05/health/webmd/main653957.shtml

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA, November 5, 2004: In an effort to curb the rising

incidence of type 2 diabetes, an Australian study has brought

significant parallels to light. After studying the diet and health

records of 36,000 men and women for four years, researchers found a

direct correlation between the consumption of white bread and starchy

foods with diabetes. The news release explains, " Results were based on

food frequency questionnaires and diabetes diagnoses made during the

study. Special attention was paid to the glycemic index (GI) of the

foods eaten by participants. The glycemic index measures a food's

impact on blood sugar. High-GI foods like white bread, cakes, and

biscuits spike blood sugar dramatically, while lower-GI carbs including

most vegetables and legumes have a smaller effect. " Researchers,

including Allison Hodge of the Cancer Council in Victoria, said,

" Participants who ate the most white bread -- more than 17 slices per

week -- had the highest risk of diabetes. " The November issue of the

journal Diabetes Care says, " Researchers claim that the simple change

from white bread to lower-GI bread within a high carbohydrate diet

could reduce the risk of diabetes. Changing bread type may be a more

acceptable dietary change than one requiring a whole new eating

pattern. " Hodge and colleagues add, " Of course, eating too much of any

food can add pounds, raising the risk of diabetes. "

6. Americans Support Biblical Creationism but Are Skeptical on Details

Religion News Service

USA, November 29, 2004: A Gallup Poll suggests that Americans are

divided over how the world was created -- either through evolution or

at the hand of God -- but either way they appear skeptical that it

happened exactly as described in the book of Genesis. The poll found

that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution remains controversial among

Americans. About one-third say it is supported by evidence, one-third

see it as bunk and one-third don't know enough to judge. A plurality of

Americans -- 45 percent -- say man was created by God in his present

form, while 38 percent say man developed over time as God guided the

process. Just 13 percent said God had no role in the process. Yet a

smaller percentage, 34 percent, said the Bible is the actual word of

God and should be read literally. Pollsters said that discrepancy

suggests that Americans believe man was created as-is, but not because

the Bible says so.

Breaking down the numbers, Gallup officials said about one-quarter of

Americans are " biblical literalists " who believe man was created 10,000

years ago in his present form. They tend to be women, conservatives,

Republicans and attend a Protestant church at least once a week. A

slightly smaller number -- one in five Americans -- believe man was

created in his present form 10,000 years ago, but not because they read

the Bible literally. Just 9 percent of the country read the Bible

literally but are open to the theory of evolution.

The largest group -- 46 percent -- do not read the Bible literally and

believe humans may have evolved over time. This group tends to be male,

urban, more educated, Catholic and seldom or never attend church. " It

is not surprising to find that the biblical literalists who believe

that God created humans 10,000 years ago tend to be more religious and

Protestant, " said Frank Newport, Gallup's editor in chief. " Given the

recent emphasis on the importance of religion in the Nov. 2

presidential election, it is of interest to note that this 'true

believer' group tends to be more Republican than (most Americans). " The

survey of 1,016 adults has a margin of error of plus or minus 3

percentage points.
