Dear friends,

For anyone interested, I just wanted to pass along this fascinating British

article about the state-of-the-art, academic study of " happiness. " It's

only partly related to our practice; however, it's interesting to see how

psychology researchers have backed away from just studying the factors that

cause sadness, and turned to studying what causes happiness. It theorizes

that our evolution has predisposed us to negative emotion, but we can train

ourselves to experience greater wellbeing.

Favourite quotes:

" Professor Richard Davidson at the University of Wisconsin has scanned

brains in different emotional states. When he wired up a Buddhist monk

entering a state of bliss through meditation, he found electrical activity

shooting up the frontal lobe of the monk's brain on the left side. "

" Psychologists such as Seligman are convinced you can train yourself to be

happier... The treatments work by boosting positive emotion about the past,

by teaching people to savour the present, and by increasing the amount of

engagement and meaning in their lives. "

It's a long article... In my opinion, worth the read.

Peace to you all,

Br. Peter
