YOGACHARYA DR ANANDA RECEIVES PONNADAI HONOURS FROM SHANKARACHARYA OF KANCHI MUTT Yogacharya Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani was invited as a special guest to receive the first copy of a new book ADVANCED YOGA POSTURES authored by Yogiraj S Sathyanarayanan, the Asthana Yogacharya of the famous Shri Shankara Mutt of Kancheepuram. The event was organised

as part of a National Invitation Yoga Sport Championship 2006 organised by the Yoga Cultural Society of Tamil Nadu from august 4th to 7th 2006. Dr Ananda was accompanied by Yogacharya Muralidharan Giri, one of the important moving forces behind the Gitananda Yoga Association of Australia and Mr. R Balaji, a long time student of Yognat who is now a medical student unifying his decade long Yoga training with the modern medical knowledge. At the inaugural function Dr Asana Andiappan, Vice President of the CCRYN (Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy) released the first copy of the book to Dr Ananda in the presence of numerous local dignitaries

and a host of yoga enthusiasts from all over the country. Dr Ananda in his book review speech congratulated Yogiraj Sathyanarayanan on his excellent effort despite English not being his native language. ADVANCED YOGA POSTURES is one of the first steps towards fulfilling a long time felt-need of the Yoga sports enthusiasts. He complimented Yogiraj Sathyanarayanan who in the book has classified various advanced postures according to a grading of A, B and C to denote their level of difficulty and possibility of high marking in Yoga Sport events. A posture that is thus graded A has the best chance of obtaining the maximum marks of 10/10 while a pose of grade C may only get maximum of 6/10 in any Yoga Sport event. This is an important guideline for all Yoga Sport competitors and coaches as the best of performances can be attained

only after meticulous and detailed planning as well as dedicated practice. He also noted that the book has more than a two hundred photos of excellent Yogasanas performed by students of Sathyanarayanan with explanation and notes that are given under the various classifications of standing, back bending, balancing etc. This photographic illustration of Yogasanas under the apt classification will serve as a timely reminder for all Yoga Sport competitors and coaches because all Yoga Sports events are nowadays having multiple sub-events based on the various types of Yogasanas classified as front bending, back bending, twisting, standing etc. He congratulated the young demonstrators for their extraordinary skill in action but felt let down by the quality of the photo printing that detracted from the overall effect. Dr Ananda reminded the audience of the path breaking efforts for Yoga Sports made by Yogamaharishi Dr Swami Gitananda Giri Guru Maharaj, one of the Founding Fathers of the International Yoga Sport Movement. Dr Asana Andiappan recalled his unique experiences with Pujya Swamiji and motivated all Yoga enthusiasts to take

up university courses in yoga and spread the message of Yoga worldwide. He mentioned the many schemes available for the propagation of Yoga trough the CCRYN and requested the Yoga teachers and centres to make use of such facilities. Yogacharya Muralidharan also spoke on the occasion and wished everyone the very best for their efforts. After the function, the main functionaries escorted Dr Ananda, Muralidharan and Balaji to the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam where Dr Ananda was given Dharshan and Ponnadai honors by the Senior Shankaracharya of Kancheepuram. He also received the Dharshan of the Junior Acharya on the occasion. Dr Ananda had more than 20 years ago received such honors from the Acharya when Swamiji and Amma had been invited to the Mutt when Swamiji was the first vice president of the Association of Madathiapathis

under the presidency of the Shankaracharya. After the Dharshan, Dr Ananda commented to Muralidharan that this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for him to have had a chance to receive the Dharshan and blessing of the two Shankaracharyas of Kancheepuram on the occasion of Varalakshmi Nombu that is a very sacred day for the Divine Shakti in the form of Lakshmi. Yogacharya Dr.Ananda Balayogi
