Heal Thy Self with Pranava AUM A reflection on Dr Tushar K Ray’s second and third contributions, A Yogic Remedy from Diseases and Yoga – the Man-making Science, on 5/13/07 & 5/23/07 In the second contribution the respected Doctor’s contention is that all will be well if we do Yoga-Meditation. The blockage of energy flows are primarily responsible for our physical conditions and that these are neutralized by the highest spiritual practice of meditation. In the third contribution his contention is that this man-making Science of Yoga-Mediation is the way to program oneself for self-realization. While conceding that meditation is the ultimate in yogic

practices, it has to be remembered that we live in five energy bodies (koshas) needing daily sustenance of prana (cosmic energy). This includes the physical body, which is also an energy body, and its cells. Lack or depletion of energy and an imbalance in the solar (positive) and lunar (negative) energies can also create physical and/or mental conditions. The Doctor’s contention that “However focusing own mind on our blissful soul, allows a content mind to come to a standstill, when body joins mind turning joyfully tranquil, while energy-flow gradually comes to be normal” is difficult for me to accept. In my humble opinion and experience the body and mind have to be prepared to meditate successfully, and there are

classical and scientific breathing (Pranayama) techniques to achieve it, The only School of Yoga which teaches these techniques is the International Centre for Yoga Education and Research, Pondicherry. They belong to the ancient Rishiculture Ashtanga Yoga tradition. I learnt them under the late Yogamaharishi Dr Swami Gitananda Giri Guru Maharaj (Swamiji) an authority on Pranayama . His son and heir Yogacharya Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, Director, is

continuing his good work, under the present spiritual head Yogacharini Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani (Amma - his mother). There are one hundred and twenty classical and scientific breathing (Pranayama) techniques. Pranayama is the regulation of prana within the energy bodies, which constitute the body-mind complex. It teaches you how to absorb prana and regulate it (in different ratios and rhythms) to regenerate and rejuvenate, how to give a superior massage to the vital organs within the abdominal, pelvic and chest cavities and harmonize them, cleanse the five elements in the brain, cleanse and tone the energy channels in the Pranamaya Kosha, detoxify the metabolic and toxic wastes in the physical body, (“we are more toxic

than sick” – Swamiji) neutralize emotional traumas and tensions, and so on the long list goes. One of the practices, Mahat Yoga Pranayama, produces the enzyme ‘elastin’ which makes the 62 trillion cells biologically young. That may explain why I have hardly any wrinkles, though I’m in my eighties. There is nothing beyond Pranayama. It regenerates, rejuvenates, rehabilitates one from any serious condition (within the constraints of karma), and leads one to meditation. It ushers in a new lease of life. It is an experience of a lifetime. The ancient secret to good health and longevity was to breathe slowly, deeply and rhythmically. Further the span of one’s life is measured by the number of breaths and not years, months,

days etc. For example my “use-by date”, according to astrology, was 84 yeas of age, but I’m continuing my life in good health, as I have succeeded in lowering my rate of breathing as a result of practising Mahat Yoga Pranayama daily for the last eighteen years. The slowing of the rate of breathing, slows down all the bodily processes giving all the time for renewal, repair and healing. That is how the ancient rishis lived for hundreds of years. For example the giant tortoise breathes only three breaths per minute and lives for three hundred years. In my sincere and humble opinion, one has to develop physically, mentally (and emotionally) to successfully meditate and get the maximum mileage out of meditation/kriya yoga.

And that is done only through classical and scientific Pranayama (and not through the most basic breathing techniques which are being taught as Pranayama in most of the Schools of Yoga). One has to learn to breathe in Mahat Yoga Pranayama, the complete yogic breath to experience good health. One has also to learn and practice the few other Pranayamas absolutely essential to live a healthy life and meditate successfully for any length of time. I however wholly agree with all the other claims by Dr Tushar about the benefits of meditation. It is certainly the highest spiritual practice. well said.

Mind is wandering body. It is the Ekadasha Indriya. It

is half Indriya as called. It is difficult to control

the mind by itself.

When the Prana and mind becomes one means when the

prana dissolves in mind or otherway, you will reach

the stage of meditation.

To attain this start with the Prana+Ayam, modification

of breathing.

This is just my 2 cents.
