"The tragedy of life is what dies inside a man while he lives."- Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965)

HARI OM!

This is also often translated as "misappropriation" and extends to such subtle things as failure to give recognition where deserved.

The Yama's resemble a clock – each one is a vital cog which interacts with the constituent cogs to create a functioning time piece marking out our life. No one part moves without all parts. We cannot separate one from another without interfering with the total harmony of all. "Tinkering" may destroy the entire mechanism!

Each of the Yamas has an in-depth meaning beyond the external translation.

"By the establishment of non-stealing all wealth comes to the Yoga"

II. 37 Yoga Sutras, Swami Vivekananda Translation and commentary (1863-1902) originally published as "Raja Yoga: Conquering the internal Nature" late 18oo's.

"The more you fly from nature, the more she follows you; and if you do not care for her at all, she becomes your slave." Swami Vivekananda

"On being firmly established in honesty, all gems present themselves. "

II. 37 Yoga Sutras, Swami Satyananda Saraswati, Translation and commentary, Yoga Publications Trust, Munger, Bihar, India, 1976

"When the mirror is clean, you can see your face clearly in it. The virtue of asteya or honesty brings about a kind of awareness by which you become aware of hidden wealth." Swami Satyananda Saraswati

And still we have not reached the depths of Satya! Regarding the above statements; it is a "Tantric" axiom that you may have anything you do not desire! That which you do not desire you will not be tempted to steal, or wrongfully usurp. Another hint in understanding this apparent paradox is that often our very "desire" is a force standing in the doorway of entry!! Something to contemplate!

Unfolding the Yamas is like peeling off the layers of an onion, an activity which may produce tears of remorse, and yet even more wealth of meaning can be revealed by those sturdy enough to do this as a Sadhana.

Dr. Swami Yogamaharishi Gitananda Giri elucidates another deeper implication in his "The Ashtanga Yoga Of Patanjali" (Satya Press, ICYER, Tamil Nadu, India 1999).

"But, the greatest thief is he who "steals" the time allotted here to evolve into spiritual unity, Oneness."

Thus time wasted is also a form of outright robbery, burglary of evolutionary spans which are our birthright adding to our debt of life after life. "Killing time" is not murder – it is spiritual suicide!

"Many people take no care of their money till they come nearly to the end of it, and others do just the same with their time."

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749-1832, German poet, dramatist, novelist)

I think it was the Rolling Stones that said that: "you don't always get what you want....just what you need." But then again they might have pulled it from one of the Upanishads.
