Learning to live with a potentially life threatening diagnosis amplifies these feelings of the frustration, fear and loneliness that anyone of us might experience on a daily basis. Hospitals and health care providers alike are spending considerable effort to make the clinical environment more supportive for patients. People often need an alternative place, a safe haven where other people are walking the same path to wellness. At the Marin Bay Club in Tiburon, CA, a unique collaboration between fitness, health care and Yoga has created a space where cancer survivors can come together in a united effort to learn about self-healing. Three times per week these men and women come to this class dedicate to exploring the subtle therapeutic aspects of Yoga. These very dynamic class is intended to provide practitioners with tools to better understand and cope with life with cancer. Whether the students are going through treatment or have been cancer free for years, this class accepts all levels. The format helps the individual tailor and adapt the techniques to better serve students' abilities and needs, emphasizing the relationship of the physical techniques with their mental and spiritual correlates. The goal is to empower those with cancer towards personal realization. A one-of-a-kind offering in California, the classes are free to the students, partially underwritten by the Cancer Care division of Sutter Health's Marin General Hospital and private donations. A CHAPTER FROM THE TIRUKURAL I am happy to share with you some of the ancient wisdom of wellness. This is an excerpt chapter from the the Tirukural, the "holy couplets" from South Indian Saint Tiruvalluvar. Chapter 95: Medicine Kural 941 Disease is but deficiency or excess of three life forces, defined by writers of scientific texts as air, fire and water. Kural 942 The body requires no medicine if you eat only after the food you have already eaten is digested. Kural 943 Once digestion is complete, eat with moderation; that is the way to prolong the life of the body. Kural 944 Assured the last meal has digested and sensing a keen appetite, savor only foods that are fully agreeable. Kural 945 Life remains unharmed when one eats with restraint, refraining from foods that have proven disagreeable. Kural 946 The pleasures of health abide in the man who eats moderately. The pains of disease dwell with him who eats excessively. Kural 947 The thoughtless glutton who gorges himself beyond the limits of his digestive fires will be consumed by limitless ills. Kural 948 Diagnose the illness, trace its cause, seek the appropriate remedy and apply it skillfully. Kural 949 An accomplished doctor prescribes a remedy after considering the patient's nature, the disease's nature and the time of year. Kural 950 Medicine consists of a patient, a physician, a prescription and a nurse--each of these having four parts.
