In my three-quarter a decade

association with yognat as a student of dance and yoga, this was my maiden

experience as a spectator to a dance drama – sambandar charitram. My being in

the X Std this academic year robbed me of the opportunity to participate in the

dance drama, but I was very eager to watch my friends in action. The familiar

sight of Subalakshmi Mahal with the smiling banner of Swamiji was truly

welcoming. The bright, beautiful and unique kolams were a spectacular sight. I

felt a bit odd walking to be seated among the audience and not to the green

room as I usually do as a dancer. As usual the event started on time with the

arathy. The thandava of Shiva and Parvathy in the opening scene invoked a sense

of spiritual atmosphere which I believe is a must for a classical presentation of

this nature. The story of Gnanasambandar was presented in a simple and

interesting manner. All the actors played their part to perfection. It was a

sight to behold to see Agni and the snake perform to all the magnificence. I

realized the effort of the team that strives for success and the importance of

practice required for perfection. It gives me a great sense of respect for my

gurus who are striving hard to bring out the best from us. On the whole it was

an illuminating experience which made me realize the purity and the sacredness

of this great art of Bharatanatyam
