The metaphysical significance of the main characters

of Panchali Sabadam is immense. Duryodhana dn Draupadi are the main

protagonists. Duryodhana is the epitome of the arrogant, ignorant ego-man. Veda

Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharati puts appropriate words into this

Characters mouth.

“I know what is ‘Dharma’, but my heart refuses to

follow this difficult path that is most alien to my nature. I know what is

‘Adharma’, and my heart loves to follow this easier path; for that is my

natureâ€. And he does not stop there. He adds for good measure: “It is said that

you are in the heart of all beings, Krishna.

If that is so, you must be in my heart too! That means, as the indweller, it is

your responsibility to guide me properly. If I am evil, it only implies that

you have failed in your duties and responsibilities. How then can I be blamed

at all?â€

This question also puzzled Arjuna. Who asked Lord

Krishna.

Why does man commit sins, O Lord? Is he not pushed by

some irresistible force?†The Lord makes it explicit that there is no such

force operating as an impeller, and that, in the ultimate analysis, man alone

is responsible for all his actions. Man is his own best friend, man is his own

worst enemy. He has to raise himself by his own positive motivations.

Knowledge of the ‘self’ and the self-realisation

thereof is not easily attainable. The spiritual path that leads to this path is

most difficult and is centred on self-denial of the mundane pleasures. Man,

true to his nature, prefers to follow the easier path and ignores the ‘self’.

His basic ignorance of the ‘self’ knowledge and his sustained ‘ignoring’ the

‘self’ in favour of material pleasures causes all his problems. He, therefore,

loses the capacity to discriminate between the right, the eternal values of existence

and the wrong, the transitory, ephemeral pleasures of transmigratory existence.

As Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri Guru

Maharaj often said: “you don’t have problems your are the problem.†Duryodhana

is a true representation of the common man, the worldly man, who because he

himself is a problem to himself, he creates problems wherever he goes. The Lord

of Death, Yamaraj (who ironically is the father of Yudhishthar) tells

Nicheketas, “Do not mistake the pleasant for the goodâ€.

Duryodhana seeks ease and comfort, he wishes to

follow his own lower, animal nature as it is the easiest and most pleasant.

Yet, as all who know from the Mahabharatha.

This path ends only in death and destruction. Duryodhana lacks control (Dama)

Draupathi is the antagonist to Duryodhana. Self welled, proud, arrogant,

naughty, beautifully, intelligent! She is the epitome of many higher qualities.

Her fatal flaw is her arrogance. Her sarcastic laughter at Duryodhana for his

mistake in falling into the pool of water, is the catalyst of the raging

passionate fire which will co-sure all of their lives. She is courageous and

hold, but her arrogance contribution to the tragic events of the drama. She is not

an innocent victim. Like many common minds, she lacks compassion (Daya).

Yudhisthir is known as a wise man. But he too has a

fatal flaw: his addiction to the game of dice. This makes him lose everything.

He is blinded by passion and falls into confusion. The spiritual meaning of his

character is that even very highly evolved souls can be destroyed by a single

vice.

Bharathiyar, the ardent nationalist and feminist, no

doubt saw Draupathi as Mother India, disgraced and humiliated by those who

should have protected her. He wrote his epic poem in 1908 in Pondicherry,

and here this year is the Centenary year of three of his most famous works,

written while he was residing in Pondicherry.

Yoganjali Natyalayam pays its humble tribute to this

great patriot and poet by presenting his timeless work “Panchali Sabadamâ€.

Sir,

Feel so happy to have watched such a Spectacular Dance drama, The Panchali Sabadam.

The dancers excelled in their performance- each and every one of them lived the character they portrayed- that even a lay man could understand what was being expressed .

The Script, the Music, the Singing, everything added up to the glory and the success of the play. Was indeed a great touching experience that words seem to be too limited to convey

what the whole show did to us.Mind blowing experience.

ThankYou Amma and ThankYou Sir for giving us such a wonderful treat. Certainly Panchali Sabadam has out-performed all the previous ones.
