THOUGHTS ON GRATITUDE

Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani

Was having a nice talk with Ammaji the other day and realized that the sense of gratitude is so missing in today’s world because Abhinivesha Klesha is so deeply ingrained in modern beings!

Abhinivesha is the inborn affliction that makes us want to survive at any cost.

In Sutra II:15 of the Yoga Darshana, Maharishi Patanjali tells us “parinama tapa Samskara duhkahaih gunavritti virodaacha duhkhameva sarvam vivekinah†thereby allowing us to understand that the process of evolutionary transformation has to go against the intense currents of the manifest world produced by the whirlpools of the Gunas. Such a process of going against the normal tendency is definitely going to have much much more friction that the enjoyable flow along the currents that so many make day-in-day-out.

The natural tendency of the Gunas and human life is survival at any cost. If one develops the sense of gratitude, one places oneself at the risk of non-survival as we have started to feel that we owe someone something.

This higher evolutionary feeling of gratitude that is so essential for the higher spiritual awakening thus is a handicap for the dog-eat-dog world!

This is why NO ONE with any sense of survival can ever develop gratitude as it will be an Achilles heel for them in the rat race.

Gratitude precedes selfless service that precedes the competence to enter the highest state. As long as we want to preserve our “LITTLE SELF†we cannot ever become the “REAL SELFâ€.

Give up survival and develop gratitude for that helps us to move from the animal nature to the divine –that is the message of the all the Rishi Scientists of India.

While listening to Venkat’s novelty presentation today at the Best Youth Award competitions 2009, I had a nice realization that I wanted to share with you.

We always wonder why we cannot remember past life experiences- well it is because we are so possessive and selfish that we will misuse them. Give the human race anything and it is misused and abused rather than used. TV, nuclear energy-name it and we have already done that!

But once we embark on a sincere Sadhana, things chance because we change. That is why Patanjali tells us that we gain knowledge of all births if we perfect the Aparigraha, the Yama of non-coveted- ness. This is because the Universe then knows that we have lost that selfish - possessiveness and so happily grants us that knowledge (aparigraha stairye janma katampta sambhodah)!!
