Guest guest
What about people of kapha dosha? I'm predominantly kapha followed closely by pitta with vata joints! ( I did one of those multiple choice tests...) I practice 6 days a week but I still feel like I carry too much weight i.e. soft fat on the belly, waist and upper thigh area. I feel like it gets in my way especially in twists, lifts and inversions. Any recommendations for losing weight? I'm vegetarian..... Generally I eat fresh foods - a lot of fruits and veg, small amounts of grain, & I make most of my food at home. I mean my body has changed drastically since I started this practice but I'm always learning new things and I'm all ears if there is any advise available. There is no ayurvedic consultant available here. But I will look for that book " The 3 Season Diet " . Thanks! Yogababe
Guest guest
Hi, I am similar to you..and now in my early 40s...I have never been stronger in my life - physically, mentally, etc.. - then I have been with Ashtanga in my life (when is was in my 20s I ran marathons and was never this strong)..I follow an ayurvedic, Indian vegetarian diet, and have adopted cleanses and seasonal fasts into my diet. Dr. Yoshi's detox diet was good for me, but even with that, I experienced little weight loss. However, after resisting doing anything else but Ashtanga, I have very recently tried to do 20 minutes of cardio, 3 times a week, near my maximum heart rate. I am really hoping this works, because I am near my heaviest I have ever been at 140 lbs, 5'6 " , although I am pretty muscular in my build and know that muscles weigh more than fat. I practice 5 times a week, sometimes 6, plus teach 10 classes a week. I will let you know how it works, but I know that from the past, my body becomes very efficient to its routine, and that it needs a change in order to kickstart my metabolism...if anyone has any advice I would be happy to hear it. I struggle between accepting my weight, and fighting it hoping to find something that works without going back to running or the gym, where I also teach, for one hour three times a week on top of the Ashtanga practice, which is what the trainers are recommending. Then I have to battle tight hips and hamstrings again...yuk. Om, Shanti, Mary yoga_babe2000 <yoga_babe2000 wrote: What about people of kapha dosha? Guest guest
Hi I used to be overweight. 10 years ago I lost 30 pounds with a diet that restricted a lot of foods and was vegetarian. I am a vegetarian, but we have to learn to eat properly and supplement adequately to get our nutrition. The weight loss occurred at the same time that I started practicing yoga in earnest. I was seeking a way to lose an additional 10 pounds so that I could bind in Marychasna D. I did a google search on calorie restriction, and came upon the calorie restriction society. They're not about weight loss, but about proper nutrition for longevity and health. Weight loss, they say, is a result of the proper nutrition, not the goal, they say. I d to their email newsgroups and read a few books and the 10 pounds came off over a year. My weight fluctuates a little, but I'm always stronger and more energetic when I'm on the lower range. It may be that you may want to look at the ratio of carbohydrates to proteins to fats in your diet. Mine are currently about 50:25:25. That is called a zoned vegetarian diet. The zone diet is not necessarily vegetarian and admits a higher ratio of fat. My protein source is from whey powder rice bran powder, and other vegetarian sources. Maybe you need to reduce the amount of legumes you consume and study the glycemix index of the vegetables and fruits you consume. If you eat on the low glycemic side, you'll be lighter. Hope that helps. Namaste Arturo
Guest guest
Thank you, Arturo...I have not been as strict with checking those ratios...It was easy when I was not vegetarian about 5 years ago...I would live on lean chicken and leafy veggies and was about twenty pounds lighter. It has been hard to find the right mix since I have become vegetarian. I really appreciate your sharing...I am working on trying to bind in Supta Kormasana without assistance. The weight has made it more difficult. Thank you again. Guest guest
Mary, " 20 minutes of cardio, 3 times a week, near my maximum heart rate. " I don't think this will work if you want to burn fat. You need to work at a much lower heart rate, about 60% of your max and increase the length of time of your workout, 1 hour. Walking is ideal for this. Also in the morning before you eat, so that you're eating into your fat reserves rather than your carbohydrate reserves.
Guest guest
Hi! I rarely eat meat, but love seafood! And my dairy intake is minimal. Lately I've taken an interest in raw food eating. One of the books I recently got is 'The Raw Food Detox Diet' which I like for a number of reasons. One is that it encourages you to move into raw eating in stages. So it isn't too intimidating. Something you may find interesting is that her whole philosophy seems to be on creating the cleanest, most efficient/effective diet. She says 'waste=weight' and goes into food combining, etc. I haven't actually looked at the website, but here it is: http://www.therawfooddetoxdiet.com/ You may like it. I'll let you know how things go on my path. peace and light diane
Guest guest
Yes,Raw Food suits some people, but not everyone. There is no one-diet-suits-all solution. Personally, I can eat a salad about once a week, and it has to be at lunchtime otherwise it keeps me awake (raw foods being harder to digest). For me, I need my food to be cooked, and soups and stews suit me best. Each to their own ....
Guest guest
Thank you, Niall...I usually practice at 7am...I guess I better be getting up earlier...Om, Mary Niall Byrne <jeru_ie wrote: Mary, " 20 minutes of cardio, 3 times a week, near my maximum heart rate. Guest guest
Hi, I have done things like this before...and it does work...I just need to watch to balance my vata since I am vata/kapha and have trouble with digestion. Generally, I eat pretty cleanly. My treat of the day is a decaf latte, which really is a treat since I am pretty disciplined...other than that I drink lots of raw juices and salads for fiber, I will eat oatmeal and/or brow rice cakes, brown rice bread, or brown rice. Om, Peace Mary
