Guest guest
I have developed osteo arthritis in my hips. After much deliberation have resigned myself to the fact that a full hip replacement is essential. Resurfacing is not an option due to degeneration of the femur. The right hip is to be replaced next month, the other some time in the future. The new hip will have a larger femoral head than the standard one and so will allow an excellent range of motion. It would be very helpful if any of the group knows of anyone who has been through the similar procedure and their experiences post op with regards to continuing their practice. Guest guest
Yes I have had exactly the same replacement (in 2000) and it is fine, and I do a full Primary Mysore practice about three time a week and half Primary the other three days. There are certain postures I am still very careful with, like Maruchyasana C and D - your risk is of dislocation, and you should avoid anything that pushes the new hip across the midline of the body. You also need to take care with forward bends for the few months until the new hip is settled. When I had mine done, the physiotherapist told me that yoga was definitely out, definitely on the banned list, but as she was about 50 kilos overweight (okay, not that much, but she was definitely not fit herself) I basically ignored her. If you do this, it is at your risk, and the risk is of popping the new hip out of its socket. However in fact I wish I had started sooner after the op than I did, because I waiting about 3 months and by that time lots of scar tissue had formed which took me ages to break down. I have heard of other people with replacement hips also doing ashtanga, so, be careful but don't let it stop you ! Good luck with the op. Choose a spine anaesthetic rather than a general if you are offered the choice - the recovery time is far shorter. Guest guest
Many thanks for your post Annie. It's good to hear that you have a regular practice. I showed my pre op physiotherapist a cheat sheet of the primary series postures - Samashiti and savasana were O.K - all in between not recommended !. I am hoping that I have built up good body awareness to help me find a patient, but not apprehensive, route back to my practice. I'll follow your advice about the anaesthetic. Thanks again for restoring my confidence in the procedure. Rob
