Guest guest
All This may be an unusual question, directed to some of the other guys on the list. During the warm months, the humidity tends to give me rashes. I'm observing a lot of hygiene routines, applying powder and lotions to the areas to stay dry. I have gone to my doctors, so I am obtaining medical care. For my work clothes I have switched to cotton briefs (boxers shorts). I was wondering if other yogis out there might use boxer shorts as underwear with yoga practicing shorts, for example under their Prana shorts. I might give it a try, but I'm concerned that during inversions there might be loss of privacy. Jockey briefs keep things in place and out of sight, but their tightness contributes to discomfort when rubbing against the skin. Any thoughts or ideas? This is not a philosophical question, and I'm not sure it is the type that is asked during the question and answer periods at the AYRI, but health issues related to our practice are important since we all want to be well. Thanks and namaste, Arturo
Guest guest
Re: Briefs for practice I find there are good microfiber briefs available from jockey. They wick moisture away from the body, breathe, very stretchy in all directions, and dry in minutes. Similar garments are available from other suppliers e.g, Ex Officio, etc. Just google mens microfiber briefs. ashtangayoga [ashtangayoga ] On Behalf Of Arturo Veve Wednesday, August 15, 2007 12:42 PM ashtangayoga ashtanga yoga practice shorts question All This may be an unusual question, directed to some of the other guys on the list. Guest guest
Hope you dont mind a girl replying to this but my 11 year old son had a similar problem in summer whilst sleeping. For him it turned out to be a yeast problem which thrives in humid conditions hence babies often get yeasty bum. I found that canestanHC (a Clotrimazole and hydrocotizone mix) worked to reduce the discomfort and stop the infection. We then switched all his clothes to cotton briefs trousers pyjamas and he has been fine since. As for practice whilst your body is healing I personally would wear cotton thai trousers erm commando Thai trousers should be long enough to preserve your dignity even whilst upside down another alternative would be the nataraj trousers see http://www.theyogashop.co.uk/shop/nataraj-yogi- pants-pri-5261.html?reviews_id=646 which grip around the ankles and would be fine with boxers. If it is yeast it tends to hang around so clothes need to be hot washed to completely get rid of it other wise you will just reinfect yourself. Hope you dont feel to embarrased having a female responder but with two sons such conversations are actually quite common place All the best Samantha
Guest guest
Try thights with short legs. Look after cotten with 5 % Lycra, that's really comfertable and quite private.
Guest guest
Arturo: This has been a problem for me too. I've found boxer-briefs to work best. (That is the boxer style with the tighter leg). They tend to keep everything in place, don't bunch up like boxers during inversions, and have a little more air space and less rubbing than regular briefs. I hope this helps. I guess if these aren't available where you are (they're fairly common in the US), you could sew some elastic onto the leg holes of a pair of boxers, for a similar effect. Guest guest
Arturo, I often practice in cotton compression shorts with another looser pair of breathable athetic shorts over them. Actually, in David Swenson's pratice manual, he is wearing a pair of compression shorts, I believe. (They are not as tight as they look, although a lot depends on how thin your legs are, etc, etc,) They are similar to bike shorts, but cotton, and of course no padding for the seat. You can find them at most sporting goods stores for $10-20. Perhaps if you got a larger size that might work. Also, Lululemon and Be Present make loose cotton yoga pants for men. The Lululemon " luon " material is very comfortable -- but of course in the summer, pants will be hot. Another option: take a comfortable (for you) pair of cotton yoga pants (or thin cotton sweatpants/workout/ " leisure " pants) and cut them off just below the knees. (I call this the Huck Finn look) You can even pin or stitch the bottom part of the shortened leg hole so it is a little smaller and won't fall down over you thighs when you invert. That should prevent unintended exhibitionism. Good luck, David R
