Guest guest
Hello, I'm new here, not sure if I'm in the right yoga group or not. I used to take yoga and loved it. I would like to get back into it, so I've just started doing some at home. Mainly I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of a book/website/poses that may help my son. I would like to start a routine of yoga/meditation with him. He has Obsessive Compulsive disease, and this causes him a lot of stress. I'm thinking yoga and meditation might help him relax. Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated Thanks! Flipk ps. I do sell a few yoga theme t-shirts online at my CafePress shop, not sure if it's okay to mention that here or not...the site is www.cafepress.com/creativethought if you'd like to check it out. Guest guest
When the word obsessive and compulsive were mentioned, do you mean ADHD or ADD or other? Its actually disorder. A teacher specialises in this capacity / remedial yoga will be very helpful. Also dietary and the surrounding environment need to be looked into. Guest guest
I don't know of any sources on yoga & ocd specifically and am certainly not a mental health authority, but I would imagine that ashtanga could be very beneficial for your son as its primary goal is mental calm and focus, quieting the mind and its many distractions. David Swenson's book, 'Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual' is indispensable for anyone interested in the form. YOu can get it on amazon.com. Definitely check with your son's doctors before starting a practice, though, and be extra careful about starting any pranayama (breathing) exercises as they can profoundly affect the nervous system/mental state. Good luck! On Sep 11, 2007, at 11:35 AM, flipkrause wrote: > Hello, > > I'm new here, not sure if I'm in the right yoga group or not. > I used to take yoga and loved it. Guest guest
Hi I know that some therapies for OCD involve mindfulness practices - being aware of obsessive thoughts without avoiding them or acting out rituals to dampen anxiety is the main idea. Ashtanga, even though you will get to the mindulness part after a while, is mostly a physical practice to the new beginner. So I can't see what good it would do for OCD. Guest guest
HI Elekra, and thank you for the welcome. I did see that site before I joined and it's definitely a very well put together site! I plan on reading through it at greater length when I get home from work. Is Kundalini pretty much in league with chakras? Im new to chakras as well, but I am reading The Holographic Universe by Talbot (which is great!) and the author started mentioning them, and how aura energies and chakra energies can be detected by instruments of some sort. Thanks again.
