Guest guest
AAArrrgh, I practice the intermediate series and I just broke my wrist. I am also a teacher and I do Mysore and led classes. I was really enjoying my practice and then I came off a bouncy castle! Does anyone have any tips/advice about modifications to the postures and adjustments for yoga minus a wrist? Chris. Guest guest
Chris: I've done martial arts most of my life and have had many breaks - wrists, elbows, legs, ankles and have on many occasions faced that desire to practice despite physical limitations.. I'm assuming that you're in a wrist cast and expect to be for ~6 weeks. You probably don't want to hear this, but first - its really important to keep the inside of the cast As dry as possible. Otherwise you may be in for a lot of discomfort later on. Probably means minimizing sweating, etc. Also, its also probably not a good idea to load the wrist at all for 3-4 weeks. That being said, its fairly straight forward to modify the practice to eliminate wrist involvement i.e. low cobra instead of up dog, dolphin instead of down dog, etc. Maybe no vinyasa. Its interesting to do may of the poses without binding - you might find that asks for more bhanda. Perhaps try the poses available to you as a yin practice - no flow, long holds, extended breathing exercise. Also consider your attachment to continued practice right now. Give yourself a break. Take the freed up time to do something else - study the sutras, more time for sitting, kirtan. Spend it with friends. Read a good book. --- just let it go for a while - you'd be surprised how much better you might feel When you come back after a few week hiatus. Good luck with it. Its frustrating until you surrender to the reality of the situation. The good news - wrists heal relatively quickly. -tom ashtangayoga [ashtangayoga ] On Behalf Of Chris Monday, October 01, 2007 4:21 AM ashtangayoga ashtanga yoga Broken wrist.
