Guest guest
Asana and Pranayama are related to Patanjali's definiton of yoga as the 'cessation of the waves of the mind' in that they develop integration of the brain's two hemispheres into a single unified state of experience- Yoga. By using the various movements which are connected together by mindful breath awareness we soon develop the knowledge of when the 'waves' of our mind (thoughts, emotions) are leading us away from the present moment which is the unified, non-dual, state of experience mentioned above. So for example, you are trying to express trikonasana and while you are in the pose your mind wanders into what you have to do after class, or it phases back into a past memory, chances are very strong that you will lose awareness of where your breath is in its cycle, of how you are contacting the floor with your feet, of whether you are holding your bandhas and drishti will lose its focus. Using the poses and awareness of breath as a backdrop to observe the tendency of the mind to create waves and project either forward into the future or backwards into the past is the beauty of the system for it slowly teaches the mind to slow down its habitual thinking and remain connected to what is truly real- the present moment. And becoming irrevocably entrenched in the present moment as your experience creates the timeless, boundless, blissful, peaceful state of being that when directly experienced puts to rest your other question about life/death and why bother for both birth and death will be known to be an illusion created solely by memory and attachment to the false idea of being a person instead of the realization that you are the pure field of consciousness that all form arises and subsides into- the whole. Unborn. Undying. Peace to you on your journey. ashtangayoga , " osvinod " <vinod.linux wrote: > > Hi all, > I read from pathanjali yoga sutra that the defenition of yoga > as chithavrithi nirodha ( cessation of mind) > when i joined yoga classes they are teaching me some body exersises > and breathing exersises only , > i will get most of the benefits from my Gym itself, > So what is the use of doing yoga? > withou doing yoga i may live 60 years, and after doing yoga i may live > 100 years, any way after that i am going to die? > can anyone suggest how pathanjali's defenition is related to this > exercises > Regards > Vinod >
