Guest guest
This past time of practicing Ashtanga when I did the shoulder stand I felt like I couldn't breathe and it felt like my esophagus was also pushing up into my throat. My sternum was also hurting quite a bit. My teacher said that it was probably due to lack of support of my core and bandhas, which I agree as I have gained about 30 lbs (so far have lost 12 lbs though through starting Ashtanga) and my core is not as strong as it was before. And although I can pull in my uddiyana bandha well while standing, it is much more difficult to do while inverted. Anyway, I've had the worst case of heartburn I've ever had now for 2 days since that practice. Any suggestions on what I can do to improve and keep this from happening again? It is so painful and uncomfortable. I don't want to give up on the inversions, but I also don't want to go through all this pain again! I've been practicing now for almost a year and this is the first time it has ever happened. Not sure what the cause is, but am hoping it is not a hiatal hernia! Guest guest
Hey! Laura. I am answering to both of your post. So here goes..... First of all asana and pranayama are not tools to be used for weight loss but to promote health and the state of mind. Due to the system of the practise, purification, cleansing and stretching, toxins are released and muscles are toned. Gaining 30lbs in the span of two years is in fact very fast. However, I am no medical expert but age, lifestyle, weater, diet and the gaining of weight must be taken into consideration. You have mentioned, hernia, may I suggest that a doctor is consulted. You may also like to consult with your yoga teacher (I meant a proper one). According to 'Light on Yoga', the curative asana and pranayama for acidity are Utthita & Parivrtta Trikonasa, Utthitha & Parivrtta Padangusthasana, Virabhadrasana 1, 2 & 3, Ardha Chandransana, Parsvottanasana, Padangusthasana, Pada Hastana, Uttasana, Salamba Sirsasana and cycle, Salamba Sarvangsana and cycle, Jatara Parivartanasana, Paripoorna & Ardha Navasana, Urdhva Prasarita Padasana, Janu & Parivrtta Sirsasana, Paschimottanasana, Marichayasana A, B & C, Ardha Matsyendrasana 1, 2 & 3, Pasasana, Paripoorna, Matsyendrasana, Yoganidrasana Salabhasan, Dhanurasana, Bhujangsana 1, Mayuransana, Urdhva Dhnurasana and Uddiyana. ISBN-13 978-0-00710700-1 or ISBN-10 0-00-710700-5 for this book. From personal experience, injury that may have appeared to have gone may come back. Some may disappear forever but some that is more complicated may return for a visit as a result of many factors such as diet, change of weather condition, unawareness of self inflict and many more. As I have mentioned earlier, I am no expert but just sharing what I know. Hope this helps. Good luck, Jason Jason ______________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Guest guest
I don't have a hernia - I was just asking what others thought. I've seen a doctor and am scheduled to have an EGD, but am not excited about this since I live in Germany (I'm an American) and have to go to a German hospital. Just worried about the language barrier and the like. I have gained a significant amount of weight - 30 lbs over 2 years - due to stress eating. I've now lost 12 of those lbs and am working to get the other 18 lbs off. That is why I was inquiring to see if others used only yoga to do so or found other activities beneficial. I do have a great teacher - just looking for people who have experienced the same thing and have suggestions. Thanks! Laura J. Guest guest
.... Do you have a LIGHT vegetarian diet?.. also not eating for 3 hours before practice.. if you practice in the morning do not eat for the 3 hours prior to going to bed.. lots of fresh fruit after practice in the morning and one or two meals a day.. take care .. mart
Guest guest
I do have a vegetarian diet, but it is probably not what you would call light. I do eat fruit only in the a.m. on most days. I need to eat smaller meals for sure - that would definitely help with my acid reflux! Laura J.
