Guest guest
hi all, i've been practising musore style early morning yoga daily for about four months now and have been enjoying it immensley. There is a problem however, sometimes a muscle in my back, around the base of my shoulder blade, becomes extremely sensitive possibly indicating a strain. This never happens in a particular asana but about one hour after the practise. Also sometimes upon waking from my nights sleep i find the muscle is strain / pulled whatever. This strin reduces my movement and makes sitting up straight uncomfortable. Any body any ideas how this could be remedied / treated? It is always the same side of my back which has this trouble. Many thanks!
Guest guest
May not actually be a muscle strain. This is a frequent location where vetebral facets become misaligned. Chiropractors will sometimes refer to this as a " rib being out " . Recommend you see a good chiropractor. Guest guest
Hi there, It sounds like it could be your rhomboids, which is a common upper back pain experienced by people in our current technologically oriented society due to sitting in chairs with our arms outstretched to a keyboard or a steering wheel for so much time everyday. The rhomboids are the muscle between the shoulder blade and the spine. Often the stress or strain on those muscles comes from tightness and inflexibility in the pectoral or chest muscles. Try purvotanasana (start in table top first to really stretch the shoulder and chest muscles), prasarita padotonasana C (but make sure that you focus on getting your shoulders and elbows back and parallel by keeping the elbows bent and the palms facing up, instead of the common tendency to straighten the arms and press the palms together making the shoulders roll forward), and stretching your arm behind you on the wall with your thumb facing up, palm on the wall and then turn just your torso away from the wall. There was a really good article about this in the March/April '07 edition of Yoga+Positive Thinking. Most of all, take it very easy, don't push yourself, practice with a gentle mindfulness and a lot of patience. I hope this helps! namaste, sarah ashtangayoga , jefferz_lebowski <no_reply wrote: > > hi all, > > i've been practising musore style early morning yoga daily for about > four months now and have been enjoying it immensley. > > There is a problem however, sometimes a muscle in my back, around the > base of my shoulder blade, becomes extremely sensitive possibly > indicating a strain. Guest guest
Hey! Jefferz. Based on what you have described, it sounds like you may have somehow strained your upper back. There are several possibilities such as misalignment of the spine/rib (check the thoracic spine from T1-T5 to see if there is any abnormality), trapped nerve anywhere between C5-T4 of the spine, curvature of the spine, any poor habitual posture and sub-concious like sleeping pattern. Questions you might wish to ask yourself, any difficulty in breathing, passing motion or any changes to the body since the start of the symptom. Please take it slow and be mindful of your practise and try parsvottanasana. Also, get a good teacher to watch your practise to see if there is anything wrong whilst you go through the asanas. Whatever it may be I strongly suggest that you seek a professional medical advice before it worsen. Until then please rememeber to check your posture is appropriate. Good luck.
