I never went to Rishikesh so I cannot compare. I know there's an authorised teacher there but nothing is like going to the source, in my point of view ! Guest guest
I can only speak about Rishikesh as I've never traveled to Mysore...I do have several friends who have spent considerable time in Mysore practicing yoga with the Jois family. From what I gather the appeal of Mysore is that you will be linked with other like-minded Ashtangis and have the opportunity to network and enhance your practice because of the social support. I have also heard not to expect much interaction with the teacher himself as they really pack them into the Shala and it becomes a bit of a sweatshop...again I haven't been to confirm this but it is what I have heard. Rishikesh is a magical place beyond the practice of asana...its natural beauty is stunning with ashrams doting the banks of the ganges and some beautiful hikes in the area. It is not immune to the touristy vibe as it is usually full of tourists both Indian and Western but you can escape it quite easily if you want some quiet time. As far as yoga goes, there is plenty of it offered in Rishikesh although probably not of the quality that Mysore offers with regard to Ashtanga...who knows though some great teachers may have taken up residence since i was there in 2002... If this is your first time in India then I would suggest going to Rishikesh (although there is also time of year considerations as it does get cold up there beginning about now til Feb) because it will give you a more comprehensive taste of India (just getting to Rishikesh is a trip in itself with all the connections!) whereas you might insulate yourself within the ashtanga community in Mysore.... I might be wrong but if something I wrote resonated with an inner hunch that you have then I'd go with your gut. my two cents. ________________ Connect with friends from any web browser - no download required. Guest guest
In my experience there is no comparison between the two. Rishikesh has many forms of yoga, and is a spiritual centre, Mysore is the heart of Ashtanga Vinyasa as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. If you are an Ashtangi following that tradition, then Mysore is your best choice, followed by other places where there are certified & authorised teachers, such as Goa, Kerala, Auroville and I would put Rishikesh at the bottom of that list. But its a personal thing, and it depends whether you want serious practice development or casual classes and sightseeing. Whatever you choose, enjoy ! Or, best of all, try both for yourself. ashtangayoga , Namrata Bhargava <namratabh wrote: > > Hi, > > I want to attend Ashtanga classes in India and I am not able to decide between Rishikesh and Mysore. > > Please help and share your experience of two places. > > Thanks, > Namrata. > > > > >
