Guest guest
Hi, I'm planning to travel to india for 2 - 3 months next year. It has been really inspiring reading about other peoples' experiences of Mysore - thank you so much for these. However, I am interested to know whether anybody has been to more remote areas of india and found an Ashtanga teacher or other inspirational yoga teacher. The more I read the more I think perhaps I should spend longer than 2 months out there. Is anybody reading this planning to go to India in March / April 2009 - I know I will meet all kinds of wonderful people there, but it would also be nice to find a travel-buddy. Guest guest
Hi Helen, I don't think you are going to find any authorised or certified Ashtanga teachers in remote places, except on organised retreats, because they need to earn a living and need a client/student base. So they are usually in places and centres where there are plenty of students coming and going, as well as a stable resident core. In India there is of course Mysore and Goa, the main ashtanga centres, but also Auroville and Kerala. You also need to be a little careful because there are some teachers who say, Yes Yes they do ashtanga but when you get to their classes it is not the Ashtanga Vinyasa form as taught by Shri K Pattabhi Jois. Because ashtanga means 'eight-limbs' in Sanskrit and can also be applied to other forms of yoga. So you need to be clear and careful about that. And once you get to Mysore or Goa you will be sure to hook up with other Ashtangis, and meet a travel companion that way. Happy travels ! Guest guest
Thank you Barbara and Annie for your advice - I guess I should start my journey at one of the recognised centres and see what life has in store for me from there ) I can't wait!
